Packers bring in familiar BEAST name —96.2% BLOCK RATE sends shockwaves through the league as preseason looms!

The Green Bay Packers are making strategic moves to bolster their offensive line depth as training camp intensifies, bringing back a familiar face in Lecitus Smith. On Tuesday, the team agreed to terms with the versatile offensive lineman, who spent time with the Packers last year, as first reported by Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated. In a corresponding move, the Packers waived/injured wide receiver Sam Brown.

A Familiar Face Returns

Smith, originally a sixth-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2022, joined the Packers in May 2024 and spent the entirety of last year’s training camp with the team. While he didn’t make the final 53-man roster, he was signed to the practice squad until October, when the New England Patriots poached him. After being waived by New England in March and briefly claimed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith has been a free agent since May. His return to Green Bay brings a known commodity with valuable experience and positional flexibility.

Throughout his NFL career, Smith has logged 202 snaps at right guard, eight at left guard, and two as a sixth offensive lineman. His versatility was on full display during the 2024 preseason with the Packers, where he appeared in all three games, playing 79 snaps at left guard, 41 at center, and three at right guard. His performance was stellar, allowing just four pressures with an impressive 96.2% block rate—a figure that’s turning heads across the league as the preseason approaches.

Addressing Depth Concerns

The Packers’ offensive line has been hit by injuries, making Smith’s signing a timely addition. Rookie John Williams is sidelined with a long-term back injury, left tackle Rasheed Walker is nursing a groin injury, and sixth-round pick Travis Glover is dealing with a shoulder issue. All three missed Tuesday’s practice, underscoring the need for experienced depth. Smith’s ability to play multiple positions—left guard, right guard, and center—along with his familiarity with head coach Matt LaFleur’s system, makes him an invaluable asset at this critical juncture.

A Beast Ready to Make an Impact

Smith’s 96.2% block rate in the 2024 preseason is a testament to his physicality and reliability. As the Packers gear up for their first preseason game against the New York Jets on Saturday, his return sends a clear message: Green Bay is doubling down on fortifying their offensive front. With injuries piling up and the regular season looming, Smith’s experience and versatility could prove pivotal in maintaining the team’s momentum.

The NFL is buzzing about this move, and for good reason. Lecitus Smith isn’t just a depth piece—he’s a proven performer ready to make waves. As the Packers fine-tune their roster, all eyes will be on this “beast” to anchor the line and protect the quarterback in the weeks ahead.
