Buffalo Bills Send Shockwaves Through League With Midnight Signing of Obscure Alabama WR

In a surprising move that has sent ripples through the NFL, the Buffalo Bills announced the signing of wide receiver Grant DuBose on Tuesday, a player whose journey to this moment has been anything but conventional. The Alabama native, who last donned an NFL uniform on December 15 when he was carted off the field in Houston, brings a story of resilience and determination to a Bills team looking to bolster its roster ahead of their final preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

DuBose’s path to Buffalo is marked by adversity. While playing for the Miami Dolphins last season, DuBose suffered a harrowing injury during a game against the Houston Texans. Attempting to catch a pass across the middle, he was hit by Texans safety Caden Bullock, who was flagged for unnecessary roughness. The impact left DuBose motionless on the turf at NRG Stadium, where medical personnel attended to him for over 10 minutes before he was placed on a backboard and transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. The Dolphins placed him on injured reserve two days later on December 17, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

The injury was not DuBose’s first setback. A shoulder injury earlier in the 2024 season had already forced him to miss 11 games, and his latest incident capped a challenging year. Despite these obstacles, DuBose, who became an unrestricted free agent on March 12, caught the attention of the Bills, who saw potential in the 24-year-old’s raw talent and unyielding spirit.

DuBose’s NFL experience is limited but promising. In his rookie season with the Miami Dolphins, he appeared in three games, recording two receptions for 11 yards over 50 offensive snaps. His journey to the pros began at Park Crossing High School in Montgomery, Alabama, followed by a standout college career. DuBose first played at Miles College, where he helped lead the Golden Bears to a 2019 SIAC championship and an NCAA Division II playoff berth. However, when the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, DuBose found himself working odd jobs—stocking groceries, delivering food orders, and working at Walmart and Hyundai Glovis—to make ends meet.

Undeterred, DuBose transferred to Charlotte, where he excelled, hauling in 126 receptions for 1,684 yards and 15 touchdowns over two seasons with the 49ers. His performance earned him a seventh-round selection by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL Draft. DuBose spent his first season on the Packers’ practice squad before being claimed by the Dolphins after Green Bay waived him at the end of the 2023 season.

The Bills’ decision to sign DuBose, a relatively unknown player with a modest professional resume, has raised eyebrows across the league. Yet, Buffalo’s front office appears to be betting on his untapped potential and work ethic. With one preseason game remaining, DuBose has an opportunity to prove himself and carve out a role in a competitive Bills receiving corps.

As the NFL world buzzes about this unexpected signing, DuBose’s story serves as a reminder of the grit and perseverance required to make it in the league. From small-town Alabama to the bright lights of the NFL, Grant DuBose is ready to write the next chapter of his improbable journey with the Buffalo Bills.
