A special clause in the Caicedo deal gives Chelsea an easy path to “snap up” Julio Enciso from Brighton

In a masterstroke of transfer strategy, Chelsea’s owners, BlueCo, have leveraged a special clause from their record-breaking Moises Caicedo deal to secure the signature of Brighton’s talented playmaker, Julio Enciso. The agreement, reported by transfer insider David Ornstein, sees Chelsea swoop in for the Paraguayan star for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £16m, marking yet another coup in their ongoing raid on Brighton’s talent pool.

Since Todd Boehly took the reins as co-owner and chairman in 2022, Chelsea have systematically targeted Brighton, plucking 15 players and staff members from the Amex Stadium. This latest move for Enciso underscores the Blues’ aggressive multi-club model and their knack for identifying and acquiring versatile, high-potential talents. Personal terms have already been finalized with the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who is set to initially join BlueCo-owned Strasbourg, though he is firmly viewed as a long-term asset for Chelsea’s first team.

Enciso’s departure from Brighton comes after a three-year stint where he showcased flashes of brilliance, contributing five goals and six assists in 57 appearances since joining from Paraguayan side Libertad in 2022. Despite his undeniable talent, the versatile midfielder found himself outside the plans of Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, for the current campaign. Enciso spent the latter half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town, where he continued to display his flair and adaptability, making him an ideal fit for Chelsea’s ambitious project.

The roots of Chelsea’s transfer pipeline from Brighton trace back to the Boehly era’s early days, beginning with the acquisitions of youngsters Zak Sturge and Shumaira Mheuka. The Blues then shattered the British transfer record to sign Moises Caicedo for £115m in 2023, a deal that reportedly included a clause facilitating smoother negotiations for future Brighton talents like Enciso. This strategic foresight has now paid dividends, allowing Chelsea to secure the Paraguayan at a bargain price.

Chelsea’s spending on Brighton’s players and staff has now soared past £257m. Notable transfers include Marc Cucurella (£62m), Joao Pedro (£55m), and Robert Sanchez (£25m), alongside a £21m compensation package for former Brighton manager Graham Potter and his staff, including Billy Reid, Bjorn Hamberg, Bruno Saltor, Ben Roberts, and Kyle Macauley. The Blues also bolstered their backroom operations by appointing Brighton’s Paul Winstanley as sporting director in 2022 and Sam Jewell to lead their global scouting network in 2024.

Enciso’s arrival signals Chelsea’s unrelenting ambition to build a squad brimming with young, dynamic talents capable of thriving in their multi-club ecosystem. While his immediate future lies with Strasbourg, the Paraguayan’s versatility and attacking flair make him a prime candidate to eventually shine at Stamford Bridge. As Chelsea continue to reshape their squad and infrastructure, their special clause with Brighton has proven to be a golden ticket, paving the way for yet another seamless transfer triumph.
