The ongoing saga between the Dallas Cowboys and their superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons has taken yet another dramatic turn, with trade rumors swirling and tensions escalating. Despite Parsons’ reported trade request, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it clear he’s not ready to part ways with his defensive cornerstone. However, that hasn’t stopped the NFL rumor mill from churning out blockbuster trade scenarios, with the Green Bay Packers emerging as a prime candidate to pursue Parsons in a deal that could reshape both franchises.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay recently proposed a jaw-dropping trade that would see the Cowboys acquire a hefty package for Parsons. In the deal, Dallas would receive first- and third-round picks in 2026, second- and fourth-round selections in 2027, and, perhaps most intriguingly, Green Bay’s Pro Bowl defender Rashan Gary. In return, the Packers would land Parsons, a generational talent capable of transforming their defensive front.

“The Packers have been on the cusp of contending for several years but lack a generational talent like Parsons to anchor their defensive front,” Kay wrote in an August 21, 2025, article. “If they are willing to give up a package that includes multiple Day 1 and 2 picks—as well as a quality talent such as Rashan Gary—it could be enough to get Dallas to move on from Parsons this offseason.”
This proposed trade offers the Cowboys a mix of future draft capital and a proven veteran, while Green Bay would gain a game-changer in Parsons to elevate their defense to elite status.
While Rashan Gary isn’t quite on Parsons’ level, he’s no slouch. Coming off a Pro Bowl season in 2024, Gary recorded 47 tackles, 15 quarterback hits, 7.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in 17 starts for the Packers. At 27 years old, Gary is in the prime of his career and is locked into a four-year, $96 million contract with three seasons remaining. While this is a significant financial commitment, it pales in comparison to the massive deal Parsons is expected to command.

According to ESPN’s Bill Barnwell, Parsons is on track to sign a four-year, $172 million contract, averaging a record-breaking $43 million per season. With his $24 million salary for 2025 already guaranteed, a potential extension could see him earn $196 million over five years, averaging just over $39 million annually.
“When Parsons signs his deal, whether that comes with the Cowboys or somebody else, it’ll top T.J. Watt’s average salary—and not by a few pennies,” Barnwell wrote in an August 12 article. The escalating cost of keeping Parsons may force Dallas to consider trade offers, especially if negotiations continue to sour.
The relationship between Parsons and the Cowboys has grown increasingly strained. Jerry Jones recently took a swipe at Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, claiming the agent made disparaging remarks about Dallas’ contract offer. Meanwhile, Parsons has fueled speculation by scrubbing his social media of all Cowboys-related content, a move that hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans or analysts.
Despite the drama, NFL Network’s Jane Slater remains confident that Parsons will eventually stay with Dallas. “I don’t have a crystal ball, but here’s how I expect this to play out,” Slater posted on X on August 22. “Micah will talk to Jerry because Jerry ain’t trading him. Micah is a competitor, and he ain’t sitting or interested in losing game checks.”
Slater also noted that Jones, a master negotiator, likely relishes the challenge of going toe-to-toe with Parsons. “Jones secretly respects Micah’s mettle,” she added. “A worthy opponent in his favorite game—deals.”
For Green Bay, acquiring Parsons could be the missing piece in their quest for a Super Bowl. The Packers have been perennial playoff contenders but have fallen short of a championship in recent years. Parsons, with his rare blend of speed, power, and playmaking ability, could anchor their defense and make them a legitimate threat in the NFC.
The cost, however, is steep. Parting with Rashan Gary, a proven Pro Bowler, and a haul of premium draft picks is a bold move. Yet, for a player of Parsons’ caliber, it might be a price worth paying. Green Bay’s willingness to sacrifice Gary and future assets signals their determination to compete at the highest level.
For Dallas, the decision to trade Parsons would be monumental. The proposed package—Gary and multiple high-value picks—offers immediate talent and long-term flexibility. Gary could step into Parsons’ role as a dynamic edge rusher, albeit with less upside, while the draft picks provide ammunition to rebuild or address other roster needs.
However, losing Parsons, a once-in-a-generation talent, could haunt the Cowboys for years. Fans watching the Netflix series America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys are reminded of Dallas’ history of tough negotiations, from Emmitt Smith to Dak Prescott. Jones has never shied away from playing hardball, but will he risk letting a player of Parsons’ caliber slip away?
As the 2025 NFL season approaches, all eyes will be on Dallas and Green Bay. Will the Cowboys hold firm and keep Parsons, banking on a resolution to their contract dispute? Or will the Packers—or another team—make an offer too tempting to refuse? For now, the drama continues to unfold, with Parsons’ future hanging in the balance.
