Former Love Island contestant declares war on producers over “manipulated” scenes

In a fiery revelation, Love Island star Shakira Khan, the 22-year-old runner-up of the hit ITV2 reality show, has taken aim at the show’s producers, accusing them of manipulating edits to paint her as the villa’s villain. Alongside her partner Harry Cooksley, Shakira has spoken out about the toll the editing process took on her experience, claiming it distorted her image and left her feeling unfairly targeted.

In an exclusive interview with Fabulous magazine, Shakira didn’t hold back. “We constantly felt like villains,” she said. “Every chance they got, they tried to kill us off.” Her frustration was echoed by fellow contestant Toni Laites, who revealed the isolating atmosphere they endured. “During the first public vote, Shakira and I were both in the bottom,” Toni explained. “We spent weeks thinking it was us against the world, because that’s how everyone in there made us feel.”

The villa’s tense dynamics, according to Shakira, Yasmin, and Toni, created a battleground where the women were pitted against each other, allowing the men to slip under the radar. “The girls were so busy going at each other that the boys would get away with whatever they wanted,” Shakira revealed. “They’d say, ‘Let’s not interrupt this because the heat’s not on us.’” Toni agreed, adding, “For weeks, there were no solid couples because no one could even stand to speak to each other!”

One of Shakira’s most explosive clashes was with villa co-stars Helena and Meg, a feud that became a focal point of the series. Reflecting on the tension, Shakira told the Mirror, “It started on day one or two when I was put in a position where I had to graft, and I was deemed a threat. From then on, I was treated differently.” She explained that those seen as threats to others’ relationships were naturally ostracized, saying, “When you’re a threat to someone’s relationship, you’re not going to be best pals.”

The bad blood between Shakira and Meg reached a boiling point just days before the finale, when the two declared they would never be friends outside the villa. Fans quickly took to social media to voice their outrage, accusing the producers of selective editing that unfairly villainized Shakira. One viewer posted, “Why aren’t they showing when Meg kept talking bad about Shakira? It’s not fair that Shakira is getting all this heat because of what was shown, yet Meg gets off scot-free. Producers, do better!” Another fan questioned, “So what’s your beef with Toni & Shakira?”

The controversy surrounding Shakira’s portrayal even sparked a wave of complaints to TV regulator Ofcom, with a staggering 9,000 viewers in a single week claiming she was being bullied on the show. The overwhelming response from fans highlights the power of editing in shaping public perception and the emotional toll it takes on contestants.
