Front Office Cleans House: Patriots Set to Sever Ties with Another High-Profile Belichick Draft Choice.

As the NFL’s roster cut-down deadline looms on Tuesday, the New England Patriots are making tough decisions to trim their roster to 53 players. Under the leadership of new head coach Mike Vrabel, the team is undergoing significant changes, with the front office actively reshaping a roster inherited from the Bill Belichick era. One player who appears to be on the chopping block is pass-rusher Anfernee Jennings, a former third-round pick by Belichick, who may not fit into Vrabel’s defensive vision.

Anfernee Jennings: A Trade Candidate

Anfernee Jennings, known for his stout run defense, recorded nine quarterback knockdowns across 831 defensive snaps last season. While he’s a valuable asset as an early-down edge defender, his pass-rushing skills are not elite, which may not align with Vrabel’s defensive scheme that prioritizes getting to the quarterback. ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell predicts that Jennings could be traded to the Detroit Lions, where he would provide depth on the edge. The proposed trade would net the Patriots a modest return, potentially moving from a seventh-round pick to a sixth-rounder, but it’s a better outcome than releasing him outright.

Barnwell noted, “Jennings is owed $2.5 million in 2025, about half of which is guaranteed. He doesn’t appear to be in new coach Mike Vrabel’s plans, but I like him as a fit in Detroit, where the Lions could stand to add a little more edge depth.” This move would mark another departure from Belichick’s draft legacy, as Vrabel and the front office prioritize players who fit their long-term strategy.

Patriots’ Roster Overhaul

The Patriots have already made significant cuts to pave the way for their final 53-man roster. On Sunday, the team waived offensive lineman Layden Robinson with an injury designation, following 14 cuts announced on Friday. The players released include:

  • LB RJ Moten

  • RB Micah Bernard

  • WR Phil Lutz

  • DT Kyle Peko

  • TE Cole Fotheringham

  • DL Phillip Blidi

  • RB Shane Watts

  • QB Ben Wooldridge

  • DB Jordan Polk

  • LB Monty Rice

  • OL Sidy Sow

  • TE Jaheim Bell

  • DB Isaiah Bolden

  • OL Tyrese Robinson

Coach Vrabel addressed the cuts, emphasizing the balance between professionalism and empathy: “Tough day. We talked about this, we have a personal side of this and a professional side of this. This is clearly, the professional side is what we have to do. Thirty-one other teams are going to have to do it by Tuesday, so we just try to do it as respectfully as possible.”

Key Decisions Looming

Beyond Jennings, the Patriots face other critical roster decisions. The offensive line room is under scrutiny, as the team seeks to solidify its protection for the quarterback. The wide receiver room is another area of focus, with Vrabel’s choices likely to shape the team’s offensive identity. Additionally, the status of safety Kyle Dugger, who is recovering from ankle surgery, remains a point of intrigue. Whether Dugger stays or is moved could have significant implications for the Patriots’ defensive backfield.

A New Era in New England

The Patriots’ aggressive roster moves signal a clear shift from the Belichick era to Vrabel’s vision. Trading or releasing a player like Jennings, a high-profile draft pick from the previous regime, underscores the front office’s commitment to building a team tailored to Vrabel’s defensive philosophy. As the deadline approaches, all eyes will be on New England to see how the roster takes shape and whether other Belichick-era players face similar fates.
