Love Island star admits they nearly died after a serious mistake with cancer medication

Demi Jones, the 27-year-old former Love Island star, recently shared a harrowing experience with her fans, revealing how a critical error with her thyroid cancer medication left her feeling like a “walking zombie.” In an emotional Instagram Story, Demi confessed to forgetting to reorder her repeat prescription for Levothyroxine, a vital medication for those managing life after thyroid cancer treatment. The oversight led to a 10-day period without her tablets, plunging her into a state of exhaustion and emotional distress.

Demi’s health journey began four years ago in 2021 when, at just 22, she discovered a cancerous lump in her neck. What started as a seemingly insignificant bump turned into a life-altering diagnosis after fans and strangers online urged her to seek medical attention. Initially dismissing the lump, Demi eventually visited a doctor, who conducted an ultrasound, blood tests, and fluid drainage. The results were shocking: thyroid cancer.

Within weeks, Demi underwent two major surgeries to remove the cancerous growth and her entire thyroid gland, followed by radioiodine therapy. By December 2021, she received the life-changing news that she was cancer-free. Despite this victory, Demi’s journey with thyroid cancer didn’t end there. She relies on daily Levothyroxine to regulate her body’s functions, a lifelong necessity for those without a thyroid.

In her candid Instagram post, Demi shared the toll of her recent mistake: “Thyroid girlies – I’ve made an awful mistake. I forgot to order my Levothyroxine medication before I ran out… I’m now 10 days no tablets, still waiting for them to arrive at the pharmacy. I feel like a walking zombie, so washed out and tearful.” She urged her followers to take her experience as a reminder to stay on top of their prescriptions, adding, “First time I’ve fully run out of tablets in four years since I had cancer, and omg never ever again will I forget.”

The reality star’s vulnerability resonated with her audience, who flooded her with supportive messages. Many informed her about an option she was unaware of: emergency Levothyroxine prescriptions available through the NHS for urgent situations. “I had no idea you can get emergency Levothyroxine if you completely run out,” Demi shared in a follow-up Story. “Had a few near misses over the past four years I’ve been on it now. I wish they would prescribe more than three months at a time because I feel like that goes by so quick??? Especially if it’s daily lifetime medication.”

Demi’s openness about her cancer journey and recent medication mishap highlights her commitment to raising awareness about thyroid cancer. She wears her surgical scar “very proudly” as a symbol of her resilience and survival. Reflecting on her diagnosis in a previous interview with The Mirror, she recalled the moment she heard the word “cancer”: “As soon as they said the word ‘cancer’, I just went into shock.” Yet, her determination to share her story has inspired countless others to stay vigilant about their health.

The NHS outlines several potential symptoms of thyroid cancer, including difficulty swallowing or breathing, a hoarse voice, a hard lump in the lower neck that grows slowly, neck pain, a red or flushed face, persistent coughing, and unexplained weight loss. While these symptoms can stem from various conditions, the NHS emphasizes the importance of early detection: “If they’re caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it’s easier to treat.”

Demi’s experience serves as a powerful reminder to prioritize health and stay proactive with medical care. “If you think you have any symptoms of thyroid cancer, please speak to your GP,” she urged in her interview. Her story underscores the importance of listening to one’s body—and sometimes even to concerned strangers online—who helped her catch the disease early.

As Demi moves forward, she’s vowed to never let her prescription lapse again. Her message to fans is clear: stay vigilant, stay organized, and never hesitate to seek help. With her platform, Demi continues to shine a light on thyroid cancer, proving that even in the face of setbacks, resilience and awareness can save lives.
