‘It Was Surreal’: JJ McCarthy Reveals Private Lessons With Brady, Gretzky That Prepared Him for Vikings Spotlight

At just 22, J.J. McCarthy is stepping onto the NFL stage as the youngest starting quarterback, leading the Minnesota Vikings in a primetime showdown against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. As part of a rising wave of Gen Z quarterbacks, McCarthy carries not only raw talent but also the distilled wisdom of sports legends like Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky, and Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer Joe Mauer. Their advice has shaped him as he prepares to face the glare of Monday Night Football.

“It was surreal,” McCarthy told Heavy Sports in an exclusive interview, reflecting on his encounters with some of the greatest athletes in history. “From Coach [Jim] Harbaugh at Michigan to Coach [Kevin] O’Connell here with the Vikings, and now crossing paths with icons like Brady and Gretzky—it’s humbling. They all share a common thread: carry yourself like a pro, trust the process, and put the team first. That’s the mindset I’m bringing to Soldier Field.”

For McCarthy, a La Grange, Illinois native raised just a half-hour from Soldier Field, the matchup against the Bears is a homecoming of sorts. A lifelong Bears fan, he first visited the iconic stadium at age 4, wide-eyed and dreaming. Yet, despite the personal significance, McCarthy is keeping his focus razor-sharp, treating the game as “just a business trip.”

“Home is Minnesota now,” McCarthy said with a grin during his Wednesday media availability. “We’re going down there to execute football plays and see what happens.”

Since being selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy has embraced his new home in Minnesota. Last November, he purchased a Sunfish Lake home from Twins legend Joe Mauer, just three miles from the Vikings’ facilities. The two have since forged a friendship, with Mauer stopping by training camp to offer support.

“Joe’s become a good friend,” McCarthy shared. “I knew of him as a Minnesota icon, but getting to know him personally has been special. Seeing him at camp was a highlight.”

McCarthy’s transition to Minnesota feels natural, rooted in his childhood love for hockey—a sport he credits for sharpening his football instincts. “Hockey and football are more alike than people think,” he explained. “It’s about vision, anticipation, and being a great teammate. No one embodied that better than Wayne Gretzky. My time on the ice absolutely helps me process the game on the field.”

McCarthy’s journey to his first NFL start hasn’t been without challenges. A season-ending meniscus injury during the 2024 preseason sidelined him, forcing a year-long recovery. Partnering with Alo Yoga, McCarthy leaned on their athleticwear to support his rigorous offseason training and rehab. More crucially, he leaned on a meditation practice he developed during the pandemic, which became a cornerstone of his recovery.

“Meditation is about finding balance,” McCarthy told Heavy Sports. “It’s a way to slow down, refocus, and remind myself why I play this game and who I’m playing for. I’ve looked to athletes who prioritize the mental game, and that’s helped me stay grounded.”

That mental toughness, paired with advice from his mentors to “trust the process,” kept McCarthy steady through rehab. Now, as he prepares to face 60,000 fans under the primetime lights, he feels ready to handle the moment with poise.

“It’s about building a structure that keeps me grounded,” he said. “Taking a pause, staying focused—that’s what prepares me for a stage like this.”

As McCarthy steps onto Soldier Field, he carries more than just his own ambitions. The lessons from Brady, Gretzky, Mauer, and his coaches echo in his mind: professionalism, process, and team-first mentality. These principles, timeless and universal, have prepared him for the pressure of leading the Vikings in his NFL debut.

For a kid from Illinois who once dreamed in the stands of Soldier Field, the moment is both surreal and fitting. But McCarthy isn’t here to soak in nostalgia—he’s here to execute. With the poise of a veteran and the hunger of a rookie, J.J. McCarthy is ready to write the first chapter of his NFL story.
