BOOM: It’s Official – Wilyer Abreu Activated, Ready to Feast on the Rays Sunday

The Boston Red Sox are about to get a major boost as they charge toward the postseason. Wilyer Abreu, the team’s slugging outfielder, is back in action and ready to make an impact. Sidelined since mid-August with an oblique injury, Abreu has been cleared to return and will be activated from the injured list for Sunday’s showdown against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.

Abreu’s absence left a noticeable void in Boston’s lineup. Coupled with injuries to top prospects Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, the Red Sox offense has struggled to maintain the fiery momentum that had them dominating earlier in the season. Despite missing over 40 games in 2025, Abreu remains a powerhouse, ranking second on the team with 22 home runs. His .253 batting average, .811 OPS, and 69 RBIs with just seven games left in the regular season underscore his importance to Boston’s playoff push.

The return of Abreu couldn’t come at a better time. The Red Sox, who have gone 10-10 in their last 20 games, have been maddeningly inconsistent at the plate. With a postseason berth tantalizingly close—FanGraphs pegs their playoff odds at an encouraging 89.3%—Abreu’s bat is poised to provide a critical spark. His presence will also ease the burden on younger players like Nate Eaton, who have been thrust into bigger roles during his absence.

Abreu is brimming with confidence and ready to contribute in any way the team needs. “I’m ready to play the rest of the games and the playoffs, too,” he told reporters in Tampa Bay. “I’m happy to be here with the team. If they need me in the outfield, I’ll be ready for that. And I’ll be ready for DH too.” His versatility and hunger to make a difference could be a game-changer for Boston down the stretch.

The Red Sox are still in a tight race for a wildcard spot, but their recent victory over the Rays has them inching closer to October baseball. As they wrap up their series in Tampa Bay on Sunday, Boston will look to Abreu to bring the thunder against a Rays pitching staff that’s been tough to crack. After that, the Red Sox face a crucial final week, with three games each against the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers, another team vying for a postseason berth.
