The New England Patriots have made significant updates to their injury report ahead of their Sunday matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Rookie starting left guard Jared Wilson has been officially ruled out due to ankle and knee injuries, while All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez is listed as questionable with a hamstring injury, potentially setting the stage for his season debut.

Wilson, who played every offensive snap in the Patriots’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday, sustained his injuries during the contest. He missed practice on Wednesday and Thursday and was limited in Friday’s session. This marks the first change to the Patriots’ offensive line this season, which has seen Wilson, right guard Mike Onwenu, Will Campbell, Garrett Bradbury, and Morgan Moses play 100% of offensive snaps. Stepping in for Wilson will be Ben Brown, who head coach Mike Vrabel expressed strong confidence in.
“Ben’s here because we believe in him,” Vrabel said. “He’s worked at center, he’s worked at guard through camp, and again, he’ll compete. I’m excited to see him play. Everybody’s here for a reason. Take advantage of your opportunity, and I’m sure that Ben will do that.”
Elsewhere on the injury report, outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson (knee) and right guard Mike Onwenu (shoulder) are also listed as questionable. Onwenu, however, was a full participant in Friday’s practice, and Vrabel downplayed the severity of his injury, noting that the designation is partly to comply with league rules. “We have to do it just for the sake of doing it and making sure that we’re following the rules,” Vrabel explained.
The spotlight, however, is on Gonzalez, who has been sidelined since injuring his hamstring on July 28. The All-Pro cornerback has shown promising progress in practice, taking most of the reps and working on his conditioning. Vrabel commented on Gonzalez’s recovery, stating, “I think he’s taken most of the reps. I think he’s continued to get into better condition and we’ll see how he responds from today, from the speed work today. And then we’ll go and make a decision that is best for him and best for the football team.”
As the Patriots prepare to face the Panthers, the team’s depth will be tested, particularly with Wilson’s absence. However, Vrabel’s confidence in Brown and the potential return of Gonzalez signal optimism for a competitive showing on Sunday.
