FANS ARE STUNNED: Bills HC Sean McDermott Rules Out 18-Tackle Linebacker for Patriots Game

Buffalo Bills fans were left reeling after head coach Sean McDermott delivered a surprising injury update ahead of the team’s pivotal Sunday Night Football clash against the New England Patriots. In a press conference before Friday’s practice, McDermott confirmed that two defensive starters, linebacker Dorian Williams and rookie cornerback Dorian Strong, will miss the upcoming divisional matchup due to injuries.

“Injury update: both Dorians — so [LB] Dorian Williams and [CB] Dorian Strong — will not practice and they will be out for the game [against the Patriots],” McDermott announced. The news comes as a significant blow to a Bills defense that has been gaining momentum in recent weeks after a rocky performance against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1. Despite a string of injuries on the defensive side, Buffalo still ranks an impressive ninth in the NFL in total defense heading into Week 5.

Key Losses for the Bills Defense

Dorian Williams, a third-round pick out of Tulane in 2023, has emerged as a cornerstone of the Bills’ linebacker corps. After primarily contributing on special teams as a rookie, Williams stepped into a starting role this season, recording 18 tackles and a pass defensed. His presence in the middle of the defense has been crucial, making his absence due to a knee injury a major concern for Buffalo.

Similarly, rookie cornerback Dorian Strong, a sixth-round pick from Virginia Tech, will also sit out with a neck injury. While Strong wasn’t expected to be an immediate starter, injuries at the cornerback position forced him into the lineup in Week 1 against the Ravens. He performed admirably under pressure but has since transitioned to a rotational role as other players returned. Neither Williams nor Strong is expected to be placed on Injured Reserve, offering hope for their return in the near future.

Additional Injury Concerns

McDermott also provided updates on other players, noting that defensive tackle T.J. Sanders (knee) will not practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Right tackle Spencer Brown (calf), tight end Jackson Hawes (ankle), linebacker Matt Milano (pectoral), and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (ankle) were limited participants in Friday’s practice and are also questionable, with the exception of Hawes, who was a full participant and carries no injury designation.

“And then [DT] T.J. Sanders will not practice. The rest of the guys will practice, and for T.J. and the rest of the guys that are practicing, we’ll see where it goes, take it one hour at a time at this point,” McDermott added.

A Critical Opportunity in the AFC East

The Bills, already holding a two-game lead over the Patriots in the AFC East, have a chance to tighten their grip on the division with a win on Sunday. At 3-1, Buffalo is three games ahead of the Miami Dolphins and four ahead of the New York Jets. A victory would push their lead to three games just five weeks into the season, a significant step toward securing a sixth consecutive AFC East title.

Under the leadership of McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen, the Bills have dominated the division in recent years, a stark contrast to the Patriots’ reign in the 2000s and 2010s under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Now, with a favorable matchup on the horizon, Buffalo aims to capitalize on their momentum despite the defensive setbacks.

The news of Williams’ and Strong’s absences has sent shockwaves through the Bills Mafia, with fans taking to social media to express their concerns. Many are worried about the team’s ability to contain the Patriots’ offense without two key starters. However, Buffalo’s depth and resilience will be tested as they look to maintain their defensive prowess.

As the Bills prepare for Sunday’s showdown, all eyes will be on how McDermott adjusts his game plan to compensate for the missing players. With Josh Allen leading the offense and a still-formidable defense, Buffalo remains a formidable force, but the absence of Williams and Strong could make this divisional battle closer than anticipated.
