Vikings’ Byron Murphy Got SLAPPED By The League After Controversial Win Over Browns

The Minnesota Vikings’ thrilling Week 5 victory over the Cleveland Browns in London came with a sting for cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. The NFL hit Murphy with a hefty $17,389 fine for a horse-collar tackle during the third quarter, a play that slipped past the refs’ eyes with no flag thrown. The league announced the penalty for unnecessary roughness, spotlighting the controversial tackle that saw Murphy grab an opponent by the shoulder pads or helmet and yank them down from behind—a move explicitly outlawed for its potential to cause serious injury.

This isn’t Murphy’s first brush with the NFL’s disciplinary arm. Last season, the Vikings’ standout corner was docked for taunting after looming over Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba following a key incompletion. No flag was thrown then either, but the league’s watchful eye didn’t miss it. Murphy, a 2019 second-round pick out of Washington by the Arizona Cardinals, joined the Vikings in 2023 and earned a Pro Bowl nod last year. Despite his talent, these fines highlight a pattern of on-field antics that have put him in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.

Murphy’s lucrative three-year, $54 million contract extension signed in March was meant to cement his role as a cornerstone of Minnesota’s secondary. However, his performance against the Browns drew sharp criticism from fans on social media. Currently ranked a dismal 122nd among NFL cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus (PFF), Murphy has struggled to live up to expectations. “Byron Murphy got paid then curled up and forgot how to play my lord he has been rough!” one frustrated fan posted on X. Another chimed in, “I’m not impressed with the Vikings’ willingness to wrap up running backs. On that tight end hurdle play, Ivan Pace made no attempt to wrap up, nor did Byron Murphy on the fourth down play.”

Despite Murphy’s struggles, the Vikings’ defense, orchestrated by mastermind coordinator Brian Flores, has been a force to be reckoned with. Known for his aggressive, blitz-heavy schemes, Flores has molded Minnesota’s unit into one of the NFL’s elite, surrendering just 1,449 yards through five games—sixth-fewest in the league. The defense’s tenacity has kept the Vikings (3-2) competitive as they head into their bye week before facing the Philadelphia Eagles on October 19.

While Murphy works to regain his form, other Vikings defenders have stepped up. Linebackers Ivan Pace Jr. and Eric Wilson lead the team with 37 and 35 tackles, respectively, anchoring the run defense. Jalen Redmond, Levi Drake Rodriguez, and Jonathan Greenard have each notched four tackles for loss, with Redmond pacing the team with three sacks. In the secondary, Isaiah Rodgers and Joshua Metellus have each snagged an interception, bolstering a unit that thrives on creating chaos for opposing offenses.

As the Vikings enjoy their bye week, all eyes will be on Murphy to rebound from his rocky start. The hefty fine and fan backlash serve as a wake-up call for the talented cornerback, who must channel his Pro Bowl potential to silence critics. With a tough matchup against the Eagles looming, Minnesota’s defense will need every player firing on all cylinders. Can Murphy shake off the controversy and deliver? Vikings fans are hoping their high-priced corner steps up when the season resumes.
