The Minnesota Vikings have ignited excitement among fans by opening the 21-day practice window for linebacker Blake Cashman, a pivotal figure in their defensive lineup. Cashman, who suffered a hamstring injury in the season opener against the Chicago Bears, has been sidelined for four games. His imminent return, announced by Head Coach Kevin O’Connell on Monday, signals a significant boost for Brian Flores’ defense as the team prepares for a challenging matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Blake Cashman is no ordinary linebacker. As the wearer of the “green dot” helmet, he serves as the on-field signal-caller, relaying Flores’ play calls to the defense. His absence has been felt, particularly given his standout performance last season, where he led the Vikings with 112 tackles (68 solo), 4.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hits, eight tackles for loss, a fumble recovery, and eight passes defensed across 14 starts. O’Connell emphasized Cashman’s importance, stating, “When he’s out there, and we’re playing the type of defense that we’ve been accustomed to seeing, Blake’s got a lot to do with it.”
Cashman’s injury occurred during Minnesota’s Week 1 victory over the Bears, where he recorded three tackles before being placed on short-term Injured Reserve on September 11. His absence coincided with a challenging stretch for the Vikings, underscoring his role as the heart and soul of the defense. Last season, his missed games aligned with a brief losing streak, highlighting his impact on the team’s success.
In Cashman’s absence, veteran linebacker Eric Wilson stepped up admirably. Wilson, who signed with the Vikings in the 2024 offseason after a stint with the Green Bay Packers, made an immediate impact in Week 1, earning praise as the standout player in the win over Chicago. With 35 tackles, two tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles this season, Wilson ensured the defense remained competitive. While his Pro Football Focus grade of 54.4 reflects some inconsistency, particularly in the London game, his contributions on defense and special teams mitigated the loss of Cashman.
With Cashman’s return looming, Wilson is expected to revert to his role as the third inside linebacker (ILB3) and special teams contributor, where his versatility and experience shine.
The Vikings are taking a measured approach to Cashman’s reintegration. O’Connell noted, “It will be great to get Cash back on the practice field. He’s done a heck of a job getting himself ready to go, and we’ll give him the week of preparation and see where he’s at toward the tail end of the week.” With Minnesota facing the Eagles as 2.5-point underdogs, Cashman’s potential return this Sunday could be a game-changer. However, the team must also consider a short turnaround before their Thursday Night Football clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, which may influence the decision to activate him.
Cashman, who signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract with the Vikings in the 2024 offseason, does not currently count against the 53-man roster during his 21-day evaluation window. A roster move will be required to officially activate him for game-day action.
Cashman isn’t the only Viking on the mend. O’Connell provided updates on several key players expected to return to practice this week, including quarterback J.J. McCarthy, guard Donovan Jackson, right tackle Brian O’Neill, and center Michael Jurgens. Outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel is also progressing in his recovery from a neck injury, though his availability for Week 7 remains uncertain. Quarterback Carson Wentz, who sustained a non-throwing shoulder injury in Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns, is expected to continue practicing after playing through the injury to secure a victory in London.
As the Vikings prepare for a critical stretch of the season, Cashman’s return could not come at a better time. His leadership, playmaking ability, and communication skills are integral to Flores’ defensive scheme. If he suits up against the Eagles, it will mark his third career game against Philadelphia, adding a layer of familiarity to the matchup.
Vikings.com’s Lindsey Young emphasized the team’s cautious approach, noting, “The Vikings are sure to play it safe with the dynamic defender.” With a talented roster and a defense poised to reclaim its full strength, Minnesota fans have plenty to be optimistic about as Cashman steps back into the heart of the Vikings’ defense.
