Liverpool’s pursuit of Crystal Palace’s talented midfielder Adam Wharton has been making headlines, with the young England star linked with a potential £60 million ($79.6 million) move to Anfield. However, former Liverpool player Danny Murphy has advised the Reds to shift their focus away from the £18 million ($23.9 million) signing from Blackburn and address more pressing concerns in their squad, particularly in defense.

A Faltering Start Prompts Transfer Speculation
Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool have endured a challenging start to the season, suffering three consecutive defeats across all competitions. This poor run of form has seen them lose their grip on the Premier League’s top spot to rivals Arsenal. Despite a hefty $600 million spent in the summer transfer window, the Reds are still being linked with big-money moves, with Wharton emerging as a prime target due to his impressive performances at Selhurst Park.
Wharton, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfielders, has caught the eye with his composure and playmaking ability. His potential transfer fee could see Crystal Palace make a significant profit on their initial investment. However, Murphy believes that Liverpool’s midfield is already well-equipped, and the club should prioritize strengthening their backline instead.
Murphy’s Verdict: Midfield Depth vs. Defensive Fragility
Speaking to The Metro, Murphy acknowledged Wharton’s quality, stating, “I like him [Wharton]. I think he’s a lovely footballer. The game comes easy to him. And I understand why lots of people would be interested in him.” However, he questioned the necessity of adding another midfielder to Liverpool’s roster, pointing to the depth already present in the squad.
“I think at the moment, Liverpool are quite well covered,” Murphy explained. “Alexis Mac Allister is a playmaker, Ryan Gravenberch can do it, Curtis Jones is in there, and he’s not starting everything, Dominik Szobozslai can play in there. Wataru Endo’s on the bench; he’s a more tenacious, gritty, holding midfielder.”
Instead, Murphy highlighted the center-back position as Liverpool’s most urgent area of concern. “I would think the priority for Liverpool is at center-back. That’s obviously the one area people are concerned about,” he said. While he noted that Liverpool fans would likely welcome Wharton’s arrival, he emphasized that the club’s defensive vulnerabilities should take precedence.
Defensive Woes and Missed Opportunities
Liverpool’s defensive issues have been compounded by recent developments. The club was heavily linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi late in the summer transfer window, with a deal reportedly agreed upon and a medical conducted. However, the transfer collapsed when Palace failed to secure a replacement for the England international, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. This could allow Guehi to negotiate with foreign clubs as early as January, leaving Liverpool to rue a missed opportunity.
In an attempt to bolster their defense, Liverpool signed 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni from Parma. However, the young defender’s debut was marred by a severe knee injury, which is expected to sideline him for most of the season. This setback has further exposed Liverpool’s lack of depth at the back.
Adding to the uncertainty, Ibrahima Konate’s future at Anfield remains in doubt. With less than a year left on his contract, the French defender has attracted interest from Real Madrid, who are reportedly eyeing a free transfer next summer. Konate’s underwhelming performances in the early weeks of the season have drawn criticism, putting additional pressure on Liverpool to address their defensive concerns.
A Strategic Shift for Liverpool?
As Liverpool navigate a critical juncture in their season, Murphy’s advice underscores the need for a strategic approach to their transfer dealings. While Adam Wharton represents an exciting long-term investment, the immediate priority lies in stabilizing the backline. With key players underperforming and injuries taking their toll, the Reds must act decisively to address the “concern” at center-back and restore their status as Premier League contenders.
Whether Liverpool heed Murphy’s advice or continue their pursuit of Wharton remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the road to redemption at Anfield will require careful planning and targeted reinforcements.
