The Detroit Lions didn’t hesitate, signing a former Kansas City star just hours after his release – he played 21 games over two NFL seasons with 17 tackles.

In a swift move to bolster their depleted secondary, the Detroit Lions signed defensive back Jammie Robinson to a one-year contract just hours after he was released from the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad. The 24-year-old, who has played 21 games over two NFL seasons and recorded 17 tackles, brings much-needed depth to a Lions defense reeling from injuries and suspensions.

The Lions’ decision came on the heels of a 30-17 loss to the Chiefs on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 6 of the 2025 NFL season, which dropped Detroit to a 4-2 record. Despite a strong performance from quarterback Jared Goff, who completed 23 of 29 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, the Lions struggled defensively. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl champion, carved up Detroit’s secondary, throwing for 257 yards and three touchdowns while adding 32 yards and a score on the ground.

A key factor in Detroit’s defensive struggles was the absence of cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in Week 6. The Lions were also without cornerback Avonte Maddox (hamstring) and safety Brian Branch (suspension), leaving their secondary vulnerable. Head coach Dan Campbell and the Lions’ front office moved quickly to address the issue by signing Robinson, a former Carolina Panthers draft pick.

“Per source, the Lions are signing DB Jammie Robinson to a one-year deal,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on X. “He was previously on Kansas City’s practice squad. Detroit’s secondary has been depleted.”

Robinson’s NFL journey began with the Carolina Panthers, where he played 21 games over two seasons, including two starts as a rookie in 2023. During that time, he recorded 17 tackles, showcasing his ability as a versatile defensive back. However, his 2024 season was cut short when the Panthers waived him in December, and he later spent time on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad before joining Kansas City.

While Robinson did not see game action during his brief stint with the Chiefs, his experience and familiarity with NFL schemes make him a valuable addition for the Lions as they prepare for their Week 7 matchup against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football.” With key defensive backs sidelined, Robinson could see immediate playing time as Detroit looks to rebound from their recent loss and maintain their position in the NFC playoff race.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs made room on their practice squad by re-signing wide receiver Jason Brownlee after initially releasing him. “Chiefs re-signed WR Jason Brownlee to the practice squad,” Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports reported on X. “To make room, DB Jammie Robinson was released from the practice squad.” Kansas City is preparing for the return of wide receiver Rashee Rice, who is set to rejoin the active roster after serving a six-game suspension.

For the Lions, the addition of Robinson signals their urgency to address defensive shortcomings and stay competitive in a tough NFC North. As Campbell and his team gear up for a primetime showdown, all eyes will be on how the former Chiefs defensive back integrates into Detroit’s game plan.
