Liverpool give ‘interesting’ hint into their ideal front line set-up against Eintracht Frankfurt

Florian Wirtz finally announced himself as a Liverpool player after he managed to get two assists against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

While his two assists weren’t anything groundbreaking, his performance and the position he played were rather intriguing.

Going into the tie, nobody knew how Liverpool would line up due to the versatility of the players that Arne Slot chose to start.

In the end, it was still unclear exactly what formation the Reds ended up playing, but Wirtz floated around the right wing while also filling in the gaps behind Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

This free-roaming role seemed to unlock a whole new version of the young German and proved how good he could actually be with Ally McCoist even admitting that his performance and the position he played were “interesting.”

Ally McCoist says that Florian Wirtz’s performance against Eintracht Frankfurt massively interested him

Rival fans and even some pundits have always been quick to berate Wirtz this season.

Before Wednesday’s 5-1 win, the German only had one assist to his name, with that coming against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

So, even though it technically counts as a competitive game, it’s more of a glorified friendly with nobody caring about who wins it.

However, Wirtz’s performance against Frankfurt in the Champions League proved that there’s still a special player within him, with McCoist now sharing his thoughts on how he did.

“It’s really interesting watching Wirtz when Liverpool are in possession,” he said on TNT Sports.

“We mentioned Jones and Szoboszlai are the two that are sitting, Wirtz is trying to pick up those spaces just short of Isak and Ekitike, he prowls that area of 10, 15 yards trying to take it on the half-turn.”

Arne Slot may have finally figured out the best way to use Florian Wirtz for Liverpool

Since the start of the 2025-26 season, Wirtz has been used across the entirety of the pitch.

However, no matter where he was deployed, nothing seemed to click, and it felt like the Reds may have wasted a large chunk of their transfer budget on a player who was never going to reach the heights he was expected to.

Although it’s only one game, the version of Wirtz that Liverpool fans saw on Wednesday proves that he was a smart signing from Slot.

The midfielder is a creative genius and, although not all of his passes or shots end up with a goal getting added to Liverpool’s tally, it’s clear that he’s a player that the Reds can build their team around for years to come.
