In a move to preserve one of the NFL’s most explosive receiver tandems, Dallas is expected to use the franchise tag to prevent the impending free agent from hitting the open market.
FRISCO, TX — The Dallas Cowboys’ high-flying offensive attack, powered by the dynamic duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens, has become a nightmare for opposing secondaries. And if ESPN’s Dan Graziano is correct, that nightmare is far from over for the rest of the league.
Despite George Pickens being an impending free agent, the Cowboys are not expected to let their star receiver get anywhere close to the open market. According to a report from Graziano, there is a “strong likelihood” that Dallas will place the franchise tag on Pickens to secure his services for the 2026 season.
The Financial Play: A $29 Million Worthwhile Gamble
The franchise tag for a wide receiver is projected to be a hefty sum, approximately $29 million for a single season. For most players, that would be a risky, cap-straining decision. For the 24-year-old Pickens, however, the Cowboys seem to believe it’s a price worth paying.

” I believe there’s a strong likelihood that the Cowboys franchise Pickens, assuming they remain as happy with him by the end of the season as they’ve been so far,” Graziano wrote. His reasoning aligns with typical NFL front-office strategy: “Many of the top potential free agents never hit the market because of extensions or franchise tags.”
The investment is backed by elite production. Through nine games, Pickens has been a model of consistency and big-play ability, hauling in 49 receptions for 764 yards and six touchdowns. He’s averaging a robust 15.6 yards per catch and has been held under 50 receiving yards just once all season.
From Steelers Castoff to Cowboys Cornerstone
The fact that Dallas is even in this position is a testament to their shrewdness. Pickens arrived in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who grew frustrated with his inconsistency and behavior despite his undeniable talent. In Pittsburgh, he showed flashes of brilliance, leading the NFL with 18.1 yards per reception in 2023.
The Cowboys, recognizing a potential superstar in need of a new environment, pounced, sending a third-round and a fifth-round pick to acquire him. In Dallas, paired with the elite route-running of CeeDee Lamb, Pickens has flourished, shedding the “frustrating” label and becoming a cornerstone of the offense.
The Verdict: A No-Brainer for Big D
Allowing a 24-year-old receiver with Pickens’ proven production and sky-high potential to test free agency would be front-office malpractice. He would instantly become one of the most sought-after players available.
The franchise tag is the most powerful tool at the Cowboys’ disposal to prevent that scenario. It ensures that quarterback Dak Prescott will retain both of his top weapons, maintaining the offensive firepower that makes Dallas a perennial contender. While a long-term extension could still be in the cards down the line, the tag is the simplest and most effective way for Jerry Jones and the front office to keep their explosive offense intact for another Super Bowl run.
