THE WAIT IS OVER: Bills clear top WR for action with four players questionable to face Buccaneers

Orchard Park, NY – After a grueling stretch that saw key contributors sidelined, the Buffalo Bills are getting a much-needed boost ahead of their Week 11 clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Wide receiver Khalil Shakir, the team’s leading receiver with 457 yards through 10 games, has been fully cleared to suit up, ending a tense week of monitoring his ribs and ankle ailments. But while the offense gains a spark, the defense remains a question mark, with four players listed as questionable for the primetime matchup at Highmark Stadium.

The Bills released their final injury report on Friday, revealing a mix of good news and lingering concerns as they aim to snap a two-game skid following last week’s 24-20 defeat to the Miami Dolphins. At least eight of the 14 players on the report are expected to be available, including several defensive stalwarts who missed time in recent weeks.

Offensive Firepower Returns

Shakir’s availability is the headline of the day. The second-year speedster popped up on the injury report Wednesday with a nagging ribs/ankle issue that limited him to non-contact drills early in the week. By Friday, however, he had ramped up to full participation, drawing praise from head coach Sean McDermott.

“Khalil’s a warrior out there,” McDermott said post-practice. “He pushed through, and we’re excited to have him back at full speed. He’s our yards-after-catch guy, and we need that juice against a Bucs secondary that’s been opportunistic.”

Shakir’s 457 receiving yards lead Buffalo, and his absence would have further strained an already thin wideout corps. Joining him on the cleared list are wide receiver Joshua Palmer (knee/ankle), who sat out the Miami game but returns after full practices all week, and a trio of defensive returnees: cornerback Christian Benford (groin), defensive end AJ Epenesa (concussion), and defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (wrist). All three logged full sessions Friday and are good to go.

Linebacker Terrel Bernard (ankle), defensive end Joey Bosa (wrist), and linebacker Dorian Williams (groin) round out the fully cleared group, providing depth and stability across the board. Bernard, in particular, adds speed to the linebacker room after a limited Wednesday.

Defensive Depth Tested: Four Questionable

The flip side? Buffalo’s defense, already banged up from a brutal schedule, enters the weekend with four question marks—all on that side of the ball. McDermott was cautiously optimistic but emphasized the need for contingency plans against Tampa Bay’s explosive offense, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield and a resurgent Mike Evans.

Linebacker Shaq Thompson headlines the group. The veteran has missed the last two games with a hamstring strain but practiced in full all week, including Friday. Still, he’s tagged as questionable, a testament to the injury’s stubborn nature. “Shaq’s close,” McDermott noted. “We’re not forcing it, but his leadership is huge if he can go.”

Nickel cornerback Taron Johnson, a slot coverage specialist who’s been out since Week 8 with a groin issue, took a concerning step backward. After full participation Thursday, he was limited Friday due to what McDermott called an “overnight yellow flag.” The coach downplayed it as a minor setback but admitted it complicates preparations.

“Just managing the load,” McDermott said. “Taron’s our Swiss Army knife back there. We hope it’s nothing, but we’ve got options.”

Versatile defensive back Cam Lewis (calf) was limited for the third straight day and remains questionable. His multi-role utility—covering kicks, playing safety, and chipping in at corner—makes his status pivotal.

Finally, there’s hope on the horizon with second-round rookie defensive tackle TJ Sanders. Designated to return from Injured Reserve after a knee injury sidelined him since Week 4, Sanders practiced fully all week. He’s questionable for activation Sunday, which could inject fresh legs into a depleted D-line. If cleared, it’d mark a timely return for the Bills’ second-round pick from the 2025 draft class.

” TJ’s been chomping at the bit,” McDermott added. “The second-round rookie’s nearing that return for our depleted unit, and we’re ready to get that going.”

Two Key Absences Confirmed

Not all news was positive. Starting tight end Dalton Kincaid was ruled out Friday with a hamstring injury that forced him from last week’s game early. The 2023 first-rounder leads Buffalo in receiving yards per game (56.0) and is a red-zone mismatch nightmare. His absence echoes an October 13 loss to Atlanta, where the Bills leaned on just two tight ends and fullback Reggie Gilliam for blocking versatility.

Joining Kincaid on the sidelines is defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis (shoulder), who also exited prematurely against Miami. Both did not practice at all this week, leaving clear holes in the lineup.

Stakes High in the Snowy North

With temperatures dipping into the low 30s and potential flurries in the forecast, Sunday’s game could turn into a slugfest. The Bills (6-4) sit atop the AFC East but can’t afford another stumble against a 5-5 Buccaneers squad hungry for a wild-card spot. Buffalo’s offense, paced by Josh Allen’s MVP-caliber play, will lean heavily on Shakir and a makeshift tight end group. Defensively, McDermott’s staff must scheme around the uncertainties, possibly elevating practice squad call-ups if the questionable quartet thins out further.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET. For Bills Mafia, the wait for Shakir’s return is over—but the real drama unfolds on the gridiron. Stay tuned for inactives at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
