A CAREER HANGS IN THE BALANCE! Former Bills first-round pick cut loose in latest disappointing career turn

In a move that underscores the harsh realities of the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys have waived cornerback Kaiir Elam, a former first-round draft pick whose promising career has taken yet another downward spiral. The decision, announced on Saturday, leaves the 24-year-old defensive back’s future uncertain as he hits the waiver wire, where other teams will have the opportunity to claim him next week.

Elam’s journey in the league has been marked by high expectations and persistent underperformance. Selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida, Elam was heralded for his athleticism, speed, and potential to become a shutdown corner. However, his time in Buffalo never fully materialized into the stardom many anticipated. Over three seasons with the Bills, he appeared in 29 games, starting just 12. His coverage stats were middling at best: a 70.3% completion rate allowed and a 100.0 passer rating when targeted. Frustrations mounted as Elam struggled with consistency, penalties, and adapting to the pro level, leading the Bills to essentially give up on him during the offseason.

In March, Buffalo traded Elam along with a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-rounder. At the time, the move was seen as a low-risk gamble for Dallas, a team looking to bolster its secondary amid injuries and depth concerns. The Bills, meanwhile, appeared content to recoup some draft capital for a player who had fallen out of favor.

Initially, Elam showed flashes of potential in Dallas. He was thrust into a starting role early in the season but quickly lost it due to inconsistent play. He regained the starting spot for three more games before being benched again in Week 11. In his limited action with the Cowboys—appearing in several contests—Elam allowed a 55.6% completion rate and a career-worst 105.0 passer rating when targeted. These numbers, while a slight improvement in completion percentage from his Buffalo days, highlighted ongoing issues with ball skills and coverage discipline.

The Cowboys’ decision to waive Elam is particularly surprising given their current predicament at the cornerback position. Star defender Trevon Diggs is sidelined on injured reserve with a concussion, leaving the team short-handed in a secondary already tested by a demanding schedule. To fill the roster spot, Dallas signed running back Malik Davis from their practice squad, a move that prioritizes offensive depth over defensive reinforcements. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the transaction, noting, “Cowboys waived CB Kaiir Elam and signed RB Malik Davis from their practice squad.”

This latest chapter in Elam’s career raises serious questions about his viability in the NFL. Once viewed as a cornerstone piece for a contending team, he now faces the prospect of being claimed off waivers or, if unclaimed, entering free agency as a reclamation project. Teams in need of secondary help—perhaps those with strong coaching staffs capable of unlocking his raw talent—might take a flier on him. However, his track record of disappointment could deter potential suitors, forcing Elam to prove himself in training camps or even consider opportunities overseas if no NFL offers materialize.

For the Buffalo Bills, this development vindicates their decision to part ways. The trade, which initially seemed like a minor swap of late-round picks, now looks like a clear win. Buffalo not only shed a underperforming asset but also gained slightly better draft compensation, all while Elam fails to stick with his new team. It’s a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the league, where first-round pedigree doesn’t guarantee longevity.

As Elam awaits his fate on waivers, his career truly hangs in the balance. Will another team see untapped potential in the former Gator standout, or is this the beginning of the end for a once-highly touted prospect? Only time—and the waiver claims—will tell.
