FRISCO, TX – George Pickens’ blockbuster arrival in Dallas has yielded a breakout season, but it’s now poised to trigger an even bigger storyline: a high-stakes contract standoff. As the star wide receiver’s phenomenal 2025 campaign continues, the Cowboys face a critical offseason decision that could either secure their explosive offense or ignite a major rift.
The statistics speak for themselves. Through 11 games, Pickens has shattered expectations, amassing 67 receptions for 1,054 yards and 8 touchdowns. More importantly, he has silenced any character concerns from his Pittsburgh days, emerging as a consummate professional and a perfect complement to CeeDee Lamb, forming one of the league’s most feared receiving duos.
However, this success comes with a price. With his contract expiring, ESPN insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano report the Cowboys are considering the franchise tag, projected to be over $28 million for 2026.
“A tag would be fascinating,” Fowler noted, “My sense is Pickens’ camp would strongly prefer a long-term contract.”
The negotiation is complicated by the presence of Pickens’ agent, David Mulugheta, who was also involved in the protracted and public Micah Parsons negotiations. While Graziano doesn’t expect direct spillover, he anticipates a familiar tactic from owner Jerry Jones.
“The Cowboys always cite long-term salary cap concerns,” Graziano stated, pointing to the massive deals for Lamb, Prescott, and others. He suggests Dallas would only pursue a long-term deal if it’s “team-favorable,” akin to DeVonta Smith’s role in Philadelphia. But given Pickens’ elite production, he believes the receiver will rightfully “have his sights set higher.”
The Cowboys are at a financial and strategic crossroads. The franchise tag offers temporary control but risks alienating their star. A long-term deal provides stability but requires a record-breaking commitment.
