Eagles Drop A Bombshell: Eagles Get Good News on Safety Marcus Epps Ahead of Chargers Game

In a surprising turn of events that’s sure to boost the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense, the team has received positive news regarding veteran safety Marcus Epps. Ahead of their crucial Week 14 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, Epps had his practice window opened on Wednesday after being placed on Injured Reserve (IR) with a shoulder injury at the beginning of November. This development comes at a pivotal time for the Eagles, who are looking to solidify their position in the NFC East.

Epps, originally a sixth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2019, was traded to the Eagles midway through his rookie season. He quickly became a staple in Philadelphia’s secondary, starting for three seasons from 2020 to 2022 and contributing significantly to their defensive efforts. After a stint with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 and 2024, where he started in his first year there before transitioning to a backup role, Epps returned to the Eagles via free agency ahead of the 2025 season.

During his initial tenure with Philadelphia, Epps amassed 208 tackles, three interceptions, 15 passes defensed, and one forced fumble. In 2025, prior to his injury, he appeared in eight games in a reserve capacity, recording six tackles. His experience and familiarity with the Eagles’ system make his potential return a bombshell for a defense that’s been dealing with injuries.

The timing couldn’t be better. Rookie second-round pick Andrew Mukuba, who secured the starting safety spot opposite Reed Blankenship during training camp, suffered a broken ankle and is currently on IR. This has left a noticeable gap in the Eagles’ secondary. While Sydney Brown started last season, Epps appeared to be ahead of him on the depth chart when healthy, providing valuable depth and reliability.

Epps was a full participant in Thursday’s practice, the first of the week for the team—a promising indicator for his availability. However, with the game scheduled for Monday night, his final status might not be confirmed until after Saturday’s session. Once the practice window is opened for a player on IR, the team has 21 days to activate them to the active roster; otherwise, they revert to season-ending IR. Epps can now practice with the team but must be officially activated to play in games.

This good news arrives as the Eagles face mounting pressure in the division. The Dallas Cowboys could move to 7-5-1 with a win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday night, closing the gap on Philadelphia. The Eagles have led the NFC East all season but have struggled recently and need to regain momentum. Their remaining schedule includes games against the Raiders, Commanders, Bills, and a rematch with the Commanders—not the toughest slate, but execution is key.

If Epps returns to the field, it could be the spark Philadelphia needs to shore up their defense and push toward becoming the first repeat NFC East champions in over 20 years. Fans and analysts alike are buzzing about this development, as the Eagles aim to avoid any slip-ups against the Chargers and beyond.
