The Vikings’ secret weapon? Isaiah Rodgers is quietly preparing to shock the NFL in Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings have a new player in their secondary who might just turn heads this NFL season. Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who missed the entire 2023 season due to a gambling suspension, is ready to make a significant impact in Minnesota. Fresh off a Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, Rodgers is embracing his opportunity with the Vikings and preparing for a breakout year.

At 27, Rodgers brings a blend of experience, athleticism, and determination to a Vikings defense looking to make waves. Signed this offseason, he may not have grabbed national headlines, but his potential to become a starting cornerback has the team’s defensive coordinator, Brian Flores, excited. “He just wants me to be me,” Rodgers said of Flores during minicamp earlier this week. “That’s one of the reasons why I came here. He just wants me to go out there and use my ball skills and use my knowledge to make plays.

Rodgers is already building chemistry with fellow cornerback and Pro Bowler Byron Murphy. The two have quickly become close, bonding both on and off the field. “I’d say that’s my best friend already,” Murphy said with a grin. “That’s my dawg. Obviously just met him when he got here. But we’re already playing games online, we got 2K, all those things. He’s a great guy, great teammate. But that bond’s already there.”

Their camaraderie extends to the practice field, where they challenge each other to elevate their game. “We play the game a lot,” Rodgers explained. “We ask each other about film. You know, how he sees this, how I see it. We switch from boundary to field. So we’re just having fun with the scheme and figuring each other out.” This back-and-forth could spell trouble for opposing offenses, especially considering Murphy’s knack for creating turnovers. Last season, Murphy recorded six interceptions, ranking third in the NFL, though he admitted to dropping several others. “I dropped like five or six,” Murphy said, laughing. “I gotta go make up for it this year for sure.”

Rodgers, not one to shy away from friendly competition, teased Murphy about those missed opportunities. “A lot of plays on the ball. A lot of interceptions. He dropped a lot, though,” Rodgers said with a chuckle. “He’s supposed to have at least 10-plus. So, just trying to get in that stat category with him and compete.”

Beyond his role in the secondary, Rodgers is also poised to contribute in the return game. With a kickoff return touchdown already under his belt from 2020, he’s been taking reps at returner during OTAs and minicamp. When asked by WCCO if he sees this as part of his role this season, Rodgers kept it simple: “Anything to help the team. Just having fun out here. Enjoying the process too.”

Rodgers’ mindset is clear—focus on the present, contribute in any way possible, and help bring a Lombardi Trophy to Minnesota. “Just enjoy the process while it’s here,” he said at minicamp. “Do whatever I can do to help the team win and bring a Lombardi to Minnesota.”

If Rodgers’ work ethic, versatility, and chemistry with Murphy translate to the field, the Vikings may have found a hidden gem. Under Flores’ guidance, this dynamic cornerback duo could create plenty of turnovers and make life difficult for opposing quarterbacks. Keep an eye on Isaiah Rodgers this fall—he might just be the Vikings’ secret weapon ready to shock the NFL.
