SAN ‘FRANCISCO SUDDEN CRISIS: Kyle Shanahan Gives Glum Update on this 49ers Wide Receiver

The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2025 season with high hopes, buoyed by a roster brimming with young talent ready to make their mark. Among them was wide receiver Jacob Cowing, whose sophomore campaign was anticipated to be a breakout year. Fans and analysts alike were excited to see him evolve into a key role player, potentially injecting much-needed speed into the offense. However, that promise has been derailed by a persistent hamstring injury that has sidelined him all season.

Cowing’s troubles began early, with the injury plaguing him throughout the year. The 49ers placed him on Injured Reserve in late August, holding out hope for a eventual debut. But recent updates from head coach Kyle Shanahan paint a far gloomier picture, suggesting that Cowing’s return might not happen at all this season.

“As soon as he is back to full health, we’ll open up his window,” Shanahan said in a recent press conference. “So he is not quite there yet, but he’s getting close. He’s got to pass a few more markers.”

This cautious tone raises questions about the severity of Cowing’s injury. Comparisons to teammate George Kittle, who tore his hamstring in Week 1 but returned swiftly without lingering issues, highlight the unusual nature of Cowing’s recovery. It’s led many to speculate if Cowing’s hamstring tear was more significant, turning what could have been a minor setback into a season-long ordeal.

It’s a major disappointment for the 49ers, who had high expectations for Cowing after his standout performances in OTAs and early training camp. He was poised to become a vital contributor, especially with his elite speed addressing a glaring need in the offense.

“The more speed on the field you have, the better,” Shanahan noted. “So, when you’re missing a lot of guys who can run, those are guys that you’re possibly counting on, that definitely affects everything. When you look at just some of the things you said as a whole, I think our pass game has done a lot of good things numbers-wise and things like that and help us win a bunch of games.”

The absence extends beyond Cowing. Rookie Jordan Watkins, another speedy receiver who impressed in preseason activities, has also been hampered by injuries, further depleting the team’s options. This has left the 49ers’ offense struggling to find its rhythm, missing the explosive plays that speedsters like Cowing could provide.

At this point, it seems increasingly likely that 2025 will be a lost year for Cowing. The 49ers could have really used his dynamism, especially as the season progresses toward its critical stages. Instead, the narrative around the team has shifted to one of “what could have been” – a phrase that might define their entire campaign when all is said and done.

As the 49ers push forward, the focus will be on the players who are available, but the shadow of untapped potential from talents like Cowing looms large. Fans can only hope for a full recovery in the offseason, setting the stage for a redemption story in 2026.
