BOMBSHELL IN LONDON: Bayer Leverkusen director explains what’s going to happen to Piero Hincapie after Arsenal loan deal

In a revelation that has sent shockwaves through north London, Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director Simon Rolfes has all but confirmed that Piero Hincapie will make his move to Arsenal permanent at the end of the season.

The Ecuador international arrived at the Emirates on transfer deadline day last summer on a season-long loan from the German champions, with Arsenal securing a £45 million option-to-buy clause in the deal. Now, Rolfes has left little doubt about the outcome.

Speaking ahead of the Champions League round-of-16 clash between the two clubs, Rolfes told reporters (via The Metro):

“I think it’s a very special setting for him (Kai Havertz) to come back to the BayArena and for Piero [Hincapie] too, of course. He’s still officially our player and is only on loan at the moment, but it will come to the transfer. I think for Piero it’s just as special too.”

The comment has been interpreted by many as Leverkusen effectively waving goodbye to their talented left-sided defender.

Hincapie’s journey at Arsenal has been nothing short of a success story after a slow start. An early injury kept him sidelined for several weeks, but since regaining full fitness he has become a regular in Mikel Arteta’s squad. After initially covering for Gabriel Magalhães at centre-back, the 24-year-old has made the left-back role his own in recent weeks, delivering consistently outstanding performances both defensively and in attack.

His ability to dominate duels, carry the ball out from the back, and contribute to Arsenal’s high press has drawn widespread praise. Multiple reports have already claimed that Arteta is desperate to turn the loan into a permanent deal — and Rolfes’ words only strengthen that belief.

When asked directly in Friday’s press conference whether Arsenal plan to trigger the £45 million option, Arteta was measured but clearly positive:

“We will see that. Let’s go through the season. We have already discussed the possible outcomes that we have after that (loan) period. But so far, we are very, very happy with him.”

At just 24 years old and with a release price widely regarded as a bargain in today’s market, Hincapie ticks every box for Arsenal. He has adapted seamlessly to the physical demands of the Premier League, offers long-term value, and fits perfectly into Arteta’s tactical system. Many inside the club already view him as the long-term successor to Oleksandr Zinchenko and a player capable of becoming one of the best left-backs in Europe.

With Arsenal pushing for major honours on both domestic and European fronts, securing Hincapie permanently would represent another statement of intent from the Gunners. Leverkusen’s sporting director has now effectively confirmed what supporters have been hoping for all season.

Piero Hincapie is no longer just on loan — he’s on his way to becoming an Arsenal player for good.
