BOMBSHELL IN ANFIELD: Liverpool hunt ‘unbelievable’ Xabi Alonso alternative as ‘cooked’ Arne Slot faces sack

Liverpool are facing a turbulent period under Arne Slot, with mounting pressure following a disappointing Premier League defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. The 2-1 loss at the Amex Stadium has intensified speculation about the Dutch manager’s future, as the Reds sit precariously in fifth place—just one point ahead of Chelsea in sixth—and now only three points clear of threats from Brentford and Everton in the battle for Champions League qualification.

The Reds had shown signs of revival in Europe with a convincing 4-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray midweek, but the swift return to domestic struggles highlighted ongoing issues. Danny Welbeck’s brace sealed the points for Brighton, exposing Liverpool’s vulnerability once again. Former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant did not hold back in his assessment, taking to social media to declare the team “cooked” and effectively issuing Slot his marching orders.

“Liverpool got out ran again today, and Brighton had a 40 year old [James Milner] playing in midfield,” Pennant posted. “We are cooked, Champions League football next season? No chance. Thank you Mr Slot for the Premier League title and your service but I wish you all the best next season on your future endeavours.”

Pennant, a vocal critic of Slot’s tenure this season, has repeatedly labelled the title defence as “miserable” and “abysmal.” He pointed to the growing discontent at Anfield, where boos are becoming more frequent—a rarity for a club that typically applauds effort even in defeat. “There’s massive pressure,” Pennant said earlier. “If Slot doesn’t get Champions League football next season, I think Liverpool will probably get rid of him.”

Amid this backdrop, reports have emerged linking Liverpool with potential replacements. Anfield Index first revealed interest in VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness, a 43-year-old tactician who has transformed the German side from mid-table regulars into genuine contenders. A second source, Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, has now confirmed the Reds’ admiration for Hoeness.

“Sebastian Hoeness is very highly regarded, (and has) done an unbelievable job with Stuttgart, really,” O’Rourke stated. “He’s under contract until 2028. I’m sure Stuttgart do not want to lose him, but they’ll be well aware that it won’t just be the likes of Liverpool who’d be interested in Hoeness.”

O’Rourke highlighted Hoeness’s reputation across Europe, crediting him with developing top young talent and steering Stuttgart to significant progress—including a DFB-Pokal triumph last season. Despite this, O’Rourke suggested Hoeness is not currently Liverpool’s top target. “I don’t think he’d be top of Liverpool’s list right now. It does seem that if Slot were to go, Xabi Alonso would be the obvious fit.”

Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder and a highly sought-after coach, remains the frontrunner in any succession planning. However, Hoeness’s style draws clear parallels to Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy: a preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, rapid build-up, and relentless counter-pressing. His success at Stuttgart—elevating them to top-five challengers in the Bundesliga—has made him a rising star in management circles.

As Liverpool’s campaign hangs in the balance, the scrutiny on Slot intensifies. Failure to secure a top-five finish could prove terminal for his tenure, despite last season’s Premier League success. With European football at stake and fan frustration growing, the coming weeks will be decisive for the Anfield hierarchy.

Hoeness, meanwhile, continues to thrive in Germany, where Stuttgart sit strongly in the Bundesliga table and remain in contention across multiple fronts. Whether Liverpool pursue him as a genuine alternative or merely keep options open, the whispers of change at Anfield are growing louder.
