Arsenal have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of Julian Alvarez after being informed of a special clause in the Argentine striker’s contract with Atletico Madrid that could significantly strengthen their position ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 26-year-old Alvarez has emerged as a key target for several top clubs as speculation grows over his future at Atletico Madrid. Once a standout performer under Diego Simeone, the World Cup winner has struggled for consistent playing time recently and has found the back of the net just once in La Liga since November 1 – a decisive goal against Real Oviedo. Despite his dip in form, Alvarez’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) remains high at €129 million, attracting strong interest from both Arsenal and Barcelona.
Arsenal now find themselves in pole position thanks to what Fichajes has described as a “crazy clause” in Alvarez’s current deal. The striker has a staggering release clause of €500 million written into his contract. While the enormous figure might appear prohibitive at first glance, it actually gives Arsenal a clear advantage over Barcelona, who view Alvarez as their primary target to replace Robert Lewandowski when the Polish striker’s contract expires at the end of the season.
The difference lies in financial realities. Arsenal have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness and ability to spend big on marquee signings (over €100 million), whereas Barcelona continue to face severe financial constraints. The Catalan club are reportedly struggling even to find €30 million to trigger the permanent purchase option for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United under his loan agreement. Although Barcelona are prepared to allocate a significant budget for Alvarez – who would be a first-team star rather than a backup like Rashford – their precarious financial situation at Camp Nou makes it difficult for them to compete for a player of Alvarez’s calibre.
On the other side, Atletico Madrid are determined to keep hold of Alvarez. Despite his recent lack of form, the Madrid-based club are preparing to offer him a new contract worth approximately €10 million per season, which would make him the highest-paid player in the squad. With Antoine Griezmann set to move to Orlando City, Atletico plan to position Alvarez as their new “flagship” star under Simeone. Sources close to Marca suggest the board at the Wanda Metropolitano are optimistic that Alvarez will sign the new deal, effectively ending the hopes of both Arsenal and Barcelona.
However, the “crazy clause” of €500 million has paradoxically opened the door for Arsenal. With their proven track record in negotiating major transfers and completing blockbuster signings, the Gunners are in a strong position. Alvarez – a former Manchester City forward and World Cup champion – could be the perfect addition to Mikel Arteta’s attack, bringing versatility, experience, and explosive quality that the North London side have been seeking.
The summer of 2026 promises to be a dramatic chapter in the transfer market. Arsenal currently hold pole position, but Atletico Madrid remain confident in the pulling power of their proposed “flagship” contract. Will the “crazy clause” help the Gunners turn their dream into reality? The answer is just a few months away.
