BOMBSHELL IN ANFIELD: Arne Slot defiant on Liverpool sack pressure after PSG defeat as Xabi Alonso shadow looms

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has insisted he remains fully confident of staying in charge at Anfield next season, with sources close to the Dutchman firmly pushing back against speculation that his position is under immediate threat.

Despite a disappointing title defence and a damaging 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, Slot’s camp maintains that no decision has been made regarding his future. TEAMtalk understands that the 46-year-old fully expects to lead the Reds into the 2026/27 campaign and is already preparing to oversee what is anticipated to be another significant summer rebuild.

Reports suggesting that Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had already decided to move on from Slot have been strongly denied by those close to the manager. Instead, the club’s owners, alongside football leadership duo Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes, are planning a comprehensive assessment of the entire season during the summer, with a final verdict on Slot’s position to be reached only then.

While FSG have made it clear they will not hesitate to make a change if they deem it necessary, internal sources stress that no such determination has been reached at this stage. There is also recognition within the club that one underwhelming campaign does not automatically spell the end for the head coach.

Slot himself is understood to believe he is the right man to take Liverpool forward. He remains defiant and focused, determined to turn the season around and guide the club through its next phase of evolution, including heavy investment in the squad this summer.

Growing fan frustration and scrutiny

Liverpool’s performance this season has fallen well below the high standards set in recent years, leaving sections of the Anfield faithful increasingly vocal in their calls for change. The heavy loss to PSG in Europe has only intensified the scrutiny on Slot, adding to the pressure as the campaign enters its final stages.

However, inside the club there is a more measured view. While the disappointment is acknowledged, sources close to the situation emphasise that a thorough review — rather than knee-jerk reactions — will dictate the outcome.

The Xabi Alonso factor

One significant complicating element for Slot remains the lingering shadow of Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool midfielder, who recently departed as Real Madrid manager and is currently a free agent, continues to be linked strongly with a return to Anfield.

As TEAMtalk exclusively revealed earlier this week, Alonso is ready to step back into management this summer. His deep emotional connection with the club and status as one of the most highly regarded young coaches in world football only heightens the speculation surrounding Slot’s position.

For now, though, Slot is refusing to be distracted by external noise. Those close to him insist he is fully committed to the role and confident that he will be given the opportunity to prove his worth in the seasons ahead.

The coming weeks and the final stretch of the season are likely to be pivotal, but as things stand, Arne Slot is standing firm — convinced that his Anfield story is far from over.
