Mika Godts has broken his silence on a potential summer departure from Ajax amid strong links to Arsenal and a host of other top European clubs.
Arsenal have endured a challenging period in recent weeks. After losing the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City and suffering a shock FA Cup exit to Championship side Southampton, the Gunners have also seen their Premier League title hopes come under severe pressure. Manchester City, with a game in hand, have closed the gap to just three points.
While Arsenal remain in contention to win both the Premier League and Champions League this season, questions have been raised about the consistency of their performances — particularly on the left-hand side of their attack.
Gabriel Martinelli has not reached the heights of previous campaigns, while Leandro Trossard, though a reliable squad player, is not viewed as the long-term solution in that position. Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard highlighted the area as a potential priority back in March.
“I think Arsenal will potentially go for a player on the left,” Gerrard said on TNT Sports. “I don’t think Gabriel Martinelli has been as good as he was previously maybe and Leandro Trossard is a good player but that is an area they might look at in terms of how to get the team and squad better.”
Godts Emerges as a Serious Option
Enter Mika Godts. The 20-year-old Belgian winger has been in sensational form for Ajax this season, registering 16 goals and 11 assists in just 29 Eredivisie appearances. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming widespread interest.
“ Mika Godts, expected to make his move in the summer with European top clubs on alert for Ajax gem,” Romano posted on X. “Initial approaches already took place.”
According to reports from HandofArsenal (via Now Arsenal), Godts is ‘very open’ to joining Arsenal this summer, with sporting director Andrea Berta and the club’s recruitment team continuing to monitor the young talent closely.
Godts has also been linked with Manchester United, but Arsenal appear to be leading the race for his signature should he decide to leave the Netherlands.
What Did Godts Actually Say?
In a recent interview with ESPN, where he was named Talent of the Month for April, Godts addressed the growing transfer speculation and suggestions that he has outgrown the Eredivisie.
“I’ve heard about it, but fortunately, this is not decided in a TV studio,” he said. “The people within the club and at other clubs decide that. So much is involved that I don’t even know. I hope to experience a great World Cup first, and then I’ll just come back here to hit the ground running next season.”
While his comments suggest a desire to focus on the upcoming international tournament before making any big decisions, the door to a move — particularly to the Premier League — remains wide open.
Arsenal’s Left-Side Dilemma
Arsenal’s interest in Godts makes perfect sense. The Belgian is a dynamic, direct winger capable of operating on the left, offering pace, creativity, and a strong goal threat. His profile fits the type of young, high-upside talent Arsenal have successfully recruited in recent windows.
Whether Arsenal pursue Godts aggressively or explore alternatives remains to be seen. Another name in the frame is Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, who looks increasingly likely to leave St James’ Park. Romano recently revealed that Bayern Munich are serious contenders, with Premier League clubs also expected to enter the race.
“Anthony Gordon has really serious chances to leave Newcastle in the summer window,” Romano said. “At the moment, Bayern are really interested in the player. Premier League clubs could also appear on the scene quite soon. It’s between Bayern and Premier League clubs at this stage.”
A New Weapon for Arteta?
For Mikel Arteta, adding a fresh dimension to the left flank could be the difference in bridging the gap to Manchester City and competing consistently in the Champions League.
Godts represents an exciting, relatively low-risk opportunity — a proven performer in a competitive league who is ready for the next step. If Arsenal can secure his signature, the Emirates could well be welcoming a dynamic new weapon capable of lighting up the Premier League.
The summer window is shaping up to be pivotal for Arsenal. With Godts now openly linked and reportedly keen on a move to north London, the Gunners have a genuine opportunity to address a clear squad need with one of Europe’s brightest young prospects.
