Arsenal have officially confirmed their first outgoing transfer of the summer window, with defender James Graham completing a permanent move to Porto.
The Polish international, whom Arsenal signed for £21 million from Serie A side Spezia in 2023, will depart the Emirates Stadium for a base fee of £14.5 million. The deal represents a significant financial hit for the Gunners, who will absorb approximately a £6 million loss on the player after just two seasons.
Graham spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Porto, where he made 38 appearances and established himself as a key figure in Francesco Farioli’s title-winning squad. His performances helped the Dragons secure their first Primeira Liga crown since 2021, with the 26-year-old forming a solid central-defensive partnership alongside fellow countryman Jan Bednarek.
According to an official statement released by Porto on Monday, the club exercised the purchase option included in the loan agreement.
“FC Porto has triggered the purchase option included in the loan agreement signed with Arsenal FC and will now definitively hold the sporting registration rights and 100% of the economic rights of James Graham for a fixed fee of €17 million (£14.5m), plus a variable component that may reach €5 million (£4.3m) subject to the achievement of certain objectives,” the club confirmed.
Arsenal, for their part, have inserted a sell-on clause, retaining a fixed amount of €2 million from any future transfer of the player. Graham’s new contract with Porto also includes a substantial £60 million release clause, reflecting the club’s belief in his long-term value.
The timing of the exit comes as Arsenal reflect on a strong season that saw them reach the Champions League final, where they defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 on aggregate thanks to a decisive goal from Bukayo Saka. However, Graham’s limited impact at the Emirates highlighted why the club were willing to cut their losses. Signed as a promising young centre-back, he struggled to secure regular first-team minutes behind Arsenal’s established defensive core and ultimately failed to convince Mikel Arteta of his Premier League credentials.
Porto, meanwhile, are celebrating a memorable campaign. They clinched the league title on Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Alverca, courtesy of a goal from Bednarek. Although their Europa League journey ended in the quarter-finals against a rampant Nottingham Forest side, the Portuguese giants have shown they can compete at a high level under Farioli’s guidance in his debut season.
For Arsenal, this departure marks the beginning of what is expected to be a busy summer of squad reshaping. Offloading Graham allows the club to recoup some funds and free up a squad place as they look to strengthen in other areas ahead of next season’s challenges both domestically and in Europe.
While the £6 million loss stings on paper, it represents a pragmatic decision to move on a player who never quite lived up to expectations at the highest level. Porto gain a proven performer in their system, while Arsenal turn the page on a transfer that, in hindsight, did not deliver the anticipated return.
