DaRon Bland’s value is about to skyrocket – and the Cowboys might not be ready for the bill

The Dallas Cowboys surprised fans this offseason with a swift and decisive move, locking up defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa to a four-year, $80 million extension before he could test free agency. After sluggish negotiations with stars like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, the proactive approach was a refreshing change. However, it appears to be the exception rather than the rule.

The Cowboys have reverted to their slow-paced approach with other key players, leaving All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons and cornerback DaRon Bland waiting for new deals. While Parsons garners much of the spotlight, Bland, entering the final year of his contract in 2025, is quietly becoming a pressing concern for Dallas’ front office. Their lack of urgency in negotiating with Bland could prove costly, especially as the cornerback market heats up.

NFL insider Albert Breer recently reported that New York Jets star Sauce Gardner is nearing a lucrative extension. Gardner’s deal is expected to mirror the three-year, $90 million contract signed by Houston Texans’ Derek Stingley Jr. this offseason, setting a new benchmark for elite cornerbacks. If Gardner secures a similar—or even larger—contract, Bland’s representatives will have plenty of ammunition to demand a hefty payday.

Bland, who has already proven his worth as a dynamic playmaker, is raising his value further by showcasing versatility in the slot during the 2025 offseason. Should he deliver another standout season, the Cowboys will face a tough decision. With the cornerback market skyrocketing, Dallas’ hesitation could force them to pay a premium to keep Bland—or risk losing a cornerstone of their defense. Jerry Jones and the front office need to act soon, or they might find themselves unprepared for the bill.
