Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is reportedly planning to leave Anfield at the end of the season, according to claims in the Turkish media. However, the story carries significant caveats and should be treated with extreme caution.
The Netherlands international remains one of the most important and influential players at Liverpool. When fit and available, he is a regular in Arne Slot’s starting XI and continues to anchor the defence with his leadership and world-class quality.
Van Dijk signed a new contract with the club in April 2025 and is tied to Liverpool until the summer of 2027. Despite a challenging 2025/26 campaign for both the player and the team — who were last season’s Premier League winners — there has been no indication from the club or the player himself of any desire to depart.
Turkish media speculation
According to Turkish outlet Fotomac, the 34-year-old is ready to sever ties with Liverpool and is even willing to terminate his contract early. The report claims Galatasaray, the Turkish Super Lig champions, have identified Van Dijk as their top defensive target for the summer of 2026 and that the Dutchman is “open” to a move to Istanbul.
A Spor has echoed similar interest from Galatasaray. While the Turkish club may indeed be admirers of the former Southampton star, the leap from reported interest to an actual departure — particularly one involving contract termination — remains highly speculative.
Why a Van Dijk exit looks unlikely
In football, surprises can always happen, but several factors make a summer exit for Van Dijk appear improbable.
Liverpool are already braced for the departure of Mohamed Salah at the end of the season, while goalkeeper Alisson has been linked with a move to Juventus. Losing three senior, high-calibre figures in the same window would represent a major rebuilding challenge.
Van Dijk’s experience and leadership are seen as vital for the next campaign. With Ibrahima Konaté close to signing a new deal but still developing into a true defensive leader, and young talents Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet expected to integrate into the first-team squad, the Reds can ill afford to lose their most experienced centre-back.
As TEAMtalk has consistently noted, while Galatasaray’s interest may be genuine, the idea that Van Dijk would actively seek to terminate his contract and leave one of Europe’s biggest clubs for a move to Turkey at this stage of his career feels far-fetched.
Liverpool fans can breathe a little easier for now. The Dutchman has been central to the club’s success in recent years and, barring a dramatic twist, looks set to honour the remainder of his deal at Anfield.
