Liverpool and Arsenal continue to monitor developments around Anthony Gordon closely and should not be discounted from the race for his signature this summer, as mounting uncertainties cloud a potential move to Bayern Munich.
The Newcastle United winger has emerged as one of the most sought-after attacking talents in the Premier League following an impressive spell on Tyneside. Since completing a £45 million move from Everton in January 2023, Gordon has registered an impressive 67 goal contributions — 39 goals and 28 assists — across 152 appearances. That equates to a direct involvement in a goal every 2.2 games, cementing his status as a regular for both club and England.
Despite a contract that runs until the summer of 2030, Gordon’s form has attracted interest from Europe’s elite clubs. Recent reports suggested he was edging closer to a move to the Allianz Arena, with TEAMtalk sources confirming on Wednesday that the 25-year-old’s agent had reached an agreement on personal terms with Bayern Munich.
However, the transfer remains far from assured. Newcastle are understood to value their star winger at upwards of £75 million (€87m / $101m), a stance strengthened by the absence of any release clause in his deal. In contrast, Bayern are reportedly prepared to open proceedings with a bid slightly above £50 million, potentially stretching to around £60 million (€70m / $81m) if negotiations progress favourably.
Further doubts have surfaced. The Newcastle Evening Chronicle has pushed back against claims of an agreement being in place with Bayern, while also stressing that the club does not need to sell Gordon to alleviate any Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns. These factors combined have significantly cooled expectations of a swift move to Bavaria.
As TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey notes, the situation could present a fresh opportunity for Arsenal and Liverpool — both actively seeking new wing options this summer — who are understood to be keeping a close eye on proceedings and are unlikely to be put off by Newcastle’s firm valuation.
Liverpool Advantage and Personal Preference
For Liverpool, any concrete interest could carry extra weight. Sources indicate Gordon, who supported the Reds as a youngster and spent time on their books as a schoolboy before crossing to Everton, would favour a return to Merseyside. As a result, he is expected to stall on fully committing to Bayern until he can properly assess the level of interest from Anfield this summer.
Danny Murphy Questions Bayern Move
Pundit Danny Murphy has also expressed scepticism about the Bayern link. Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Liverpool midfielder acknowledged Gordon’s qualities but questioned whether he would break into the Bavarian side’s starting XI.
“I am a little surprised,” Murphy said. “I like Anthony Gordon. He has got great strengths and qualities. His consistency is a problem… but when you look at where Bayern Munich are at, I don’t think he threatens the XI.
“He is not on [Luis] Diaz’s level or [Michael] Olise’s level. From a footballing perspective, other than the financial gain, you are going to be sitting on the bench.”
Murphy noted that while Gordon would benefit from a bigger contract and the chance to compete for trophies at a club playing around 60 games a season, the playing time situation remains a major consideration unless Bayern’s current wing options depart.
Regardless of the denials from Newcastle’s local press, the summer is shaping up to be a challenging one for the Magpies as they look to retain one of their key assets amid sustained elite-level interest. Whether Arsenal or Liverpool can capitalise on the doubts surrounding the Bayern move could define the next chapter in Anthony Gordon’s career.
