Liverpool face an early setback ahead of the new season with Hugo Ekitike sidelined by a serious injury, but the club has already been presented with a compelling solution in the form of Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen.
Ekitike, who impressed significantly following his arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, will miss the start of next season after rupturing his Achilles tendon during Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain last month. No clear timeframe has been established for his return, raising concerns about the depth of the Reds’ attacking options in the short term.
The injury represents a notable blow to Liverpool’s plans, as the French international had quickly established himself as a key contributor. Yet, as former player Florent Malouda noted, such risks are inherent in elite football.
“Hugo Ekitike’s injury is unfortunate, but that’s the life of top players,” Malouda told Snabbare. “You compete in very intense games and there’s always a risk of injury. The most important thing is for him to get proper treatment and to think long-term about how to deal with his injury. He needs to fully recover from this big injury. We just wish him a good recovery. There are many options for the French squad.”
With Ekitike unavailable, attention has swiftly turned to potential reinforcements. Malouda believes Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen could be the ideal replacement — and potentially a transformative signing for the Premier League.
The 27-year-old Nigerian striker, who joined Galatasaray permanently last year, has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer. Malouda is convinced Osimhen possesses the profile to thrive in England.
“Victor Osimhen can perform in the Premier League,” Malouda said. “When you look at his mindset, his character, and his passion for the game, I think he belongs in the Premier League.”
Osimhen has already proven himself across multiple leagues, enjoying success in Italy and France before shining in Turkey. Malouda sees the Premier League and Champions League as the natural next chapter in a career that has shown consistent growth.
“Where would he fit? Each club has a different story, a different budget, contract conditions, and situations,” Malouda added. “But I think that’s what’s missing in his career now. He’s done great in Italy, in France, and now in Turkey. I think his next step is the Premier League and the Champions League, where he can play in a team that can win it.”
The pundit singled out Liverpool — alongside Chelsea — as particularly strong fits, suggesting Osimhen’s attributes align better with those clubs than others.
“I would say Chelsea and maybe Liverpool are the clubs that would suit him way better than Manchester United. He is very energetic, he’s a leader, he is the kind of player that the fans would love.”
As Liverpool assess their squad needs following Ekitike’s setback, Osimhen emerges as a high-impact option: a proven goal scorer with the physicality, leadership, and mentality to handle the demands of the Premier League. While the club has not made any official moves public, the alignment between the Reds’ current situation and the striker’s ambitions has not gone unnoticed.
Ekitike’s recovery remains the priority, but proactive planning in the transfer market could see Liverpool not only cover the absence but emerge stronger. A move for Osimhen would represent a significant statement of intent — turning adversity into opportunity on the road to competing at the highest level.
