Manchester United’s ambitions to strengthen their midfield this summer have suffered a significant setback, with Arsenal reportedly moving decisively to hijack a high-profile £80 million target that the Red Devils had been actively pursuing.
The player in question is West Ham United’s Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes. United had made contact with the 21-year-old’s representatives, receiving “exceedingly positive” signals in return. Fernandes is said to be extremely keen on the move to Old Trafford, attracted by the prospect of Champions League football and the opportunity to play alongside his idol, fellow Portuguese star Bruno Fernandes.
INEOS chiefs have been working through an extensive shortlist of no fewer than thirteen midfield targets, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson currently at the top of their priorities. However, the club’s plan to sign two new midfielders has now hit turbulence due to Arsenal’s sudden interest in Fernandes.
According to a fresh report from The Times, Arsenal are ready to step in and seal the deal themselves. Reporter Gary Jacobs stated that “Mateus Fernandes [is] wanted by Arsenal – and West Ham may have to sell.” The Gunners’ interest aligns with manager Mikel Arteta’s desire for a more technical, gifted midfielder to complement the steel provided by Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi. Limitations in central areas were glaringly exposed in the recent League Cup final defeat to Manchester City, prompting Arteta to seek additional quality and creativity.
If Arsenal succeed in bringing Fernandes to the Emirates, one notable casualty could be Danish midfielder Christian Norgaard. Signed from Brentford last summer for an initial £10 million, Norgaard has struggled for game time, featuring in just 56 Premier League minutes this season. Arteta has reportedly not trusted him to provide adequate cover for Rice or Zubimendi.
For West Ham, the situation is delicate. The club have valued Fernandes at £80 million — a price that would roughly double their investment after signing him from Southampton for £40 million just one year ago (with Southampton retaining a 15% sell-on clause). Currently sitting 18th in the Premier League table, two points from safety, the Hammers could face a major squad rebuild and financial rebalancing if they are relegated to the Championship. In such a scenario, selling prized assets like Fernandes may become unavoidable.
United fans and the Old Trafford hierarchy will be watching developments closely. While talks over Fernandes were progressing positively and the player himself appeared aligned with a move to Manchester, Arsenal’s entry into the race has dramatically shifted the dynamics. With both clubs chasing midfield reinforcements ahead of next season, a tense transfer battle appears inevitable.
The coming weeks will be critical. Manchester United must now decide whether to push harder for Fernandes, pivot to other targets on their lengthy shortlist, or risk losing out on a player who had seemed increasingly attainable. For Arsenal, securing a technically gifted midfielder could represent a key step in addressing tactical shortcomings and challenging at the highest level once again.
