Arsenal have suffered a significant setback in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with the Argentina international delivering a firm declaration of his preferred destination this summer.
The 26-year-old forward had emerged as Arsenal’s primary attacking target ahead of what promises to be a pivotal transfer window. Fresh from clinching the Premier League title and with a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain looming on May 30 in Budapest, Mikel Arteta’s side were expected to push hard for further reinforcements in forward areas to bridge the gap at the highest level.
However, those ambitions have been dealt a major blow. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto has revealed that Alvarez has made his intentions crystal clear: “If I leave Atletico Madrid, it will only be to Barcelona.”
Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Moretto reported that the player is determined to move to the La Liga giants, forcing Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain — who have also shown strong interest — to reassess their plans. Barcelona are now reportedly set to accelerate their efforts to sign the World Cup winner, although their well-documented financial constraints mean they are unlikely to engage in a prolonged bidding war.
A Perfect Tactical Fit?
The news will come as a disappointment to Gunners supporters and the Arsenal hierarchy. Alvarez’s versatility, work rate, and proven pedigree made him an ideal candidate to elevate an already formidable squad. Former Arsenal striker Jeremie Aliadiere had previously endorsed the potential move, highlighting the Argentine’s qualities.

“Alvarez will be a great fit because he is that player, but can also play as a nine,” Aliadiere told Aceodds.com. “He will go and press with a Martin Ødegaard next to him. I want to see great players at the club, and he’s a top player and proven when he won the World Cup.”
Arsenal’s recent additions of Viktor Gyokeres and Eberechi Eze played a crucial role in securing the Premier League crown, but the club’s ambition to dominate both domestically and in Europe has driven the search for additional quality in attack. Alvarez’s ability to lead the line, drop deep, and press intensely aligned perfectly with Arteta’s high-intensity philosophy.
Simeone Acknowledges Interest
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has remained pragmatic about the situation, acknowledging the widespread admiration for his player without confirming any imminent departure.
“I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head,” Simeone said. “It’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona. It’s normal because he’s very good.”
While Arsenal fans may feel the sting of this latest transfer blow, the club’s strong recent performances have enhanced their attractiveness on the European stage. However, Alvarez’s unwavering stance appears to close the door on a move to the Emirates this summer, redirecting his path toward Camp Nou.
As the transfer window approaches, Arsenal will now need to identify alternative targets capable of adding the extra spark required to challenge at the very pinnacle of the game.
