LIVERPOOL’S BIGGEST TRANSFER HUMILIATION! The “Untouchable” Midfielder They Sold for Peanuts Just Became Their Own Worst Nightmare – And Now He’s Refusing to Come Back!

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is facing a significant midfield rebuild this summer as the Premier League champions look to refresh a department that has shown signs of fatigue.

After relying on the same core group for multiple seasons, Slot is seeing diminishing returns from key players. Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have fallen well below the standards they set during the 2024/25 title-winning campaign. Added to this are the complicated contract situation surrounding Curtis Jones and uncertainty over the future of Wataru Endo. It is clear why sporting director Richard Hughes and Slot are actively exploring midfield reinforcements, with names such as Adam Wharton and Eduardo Camavinga linked to Anfield.

Yet amid these plans, one story stands out as a particularly painful reminder of a misstep in the transfer market.

The Tyler Morton Regret

Last summer, Liverpool allowed homegrown midfielder Tyler Morton to join Lyon for less than £10 million. The 23-year-old Wallasey-born player had shown promise during previous loan spells at Blackburn and Hull City, and many expected him to carve out a role in Slot’s squad. However, the Dutch coach was never fully convinced by the England U21 international, particularly during an injury-disrupted season. With his contract running until 2027, the decision was made to cash in.

That decision now looks like one of Liverpool’s most regrettable recent sales.

At Lyon, Morton has transformed into one of the most impressive midfielders in Europe. His elegant style as a No.6, composure on the ball, and tactical intelligence have drawn widespread acclaim. The cash-strapped Ligue 1 club, who are under pressure to sell players to meet financial regulations, have nevertheless made it crystal clear: Morton is untouchable.

According to a report from Foot 01, while Lyon must generate more than €20 million before the end of June to satisfy the DNCG (French football’s financial regulator), the club’s sporting department has decided to build their team around the young Englishman. They have no intention of letting him leave this summer, regardless of their financial situation.

“Untouchable” – A Bitter Pill for Liverpool

The report states that Morton’s rapid development has convinced Lyon to make him a cornerstone of the side under manager Paulo Fonseca. As a result, Liverpool — who are now reportedly keen to bring him back to Anfield — have no chance of securing his signature this window.

This development represents a significant humiliation for the Merseysiders. Not only did they sell a promising academy product for a modest fee, but that same player has now become so valuable that the buying club refuses to entertain offers even when they desperately need to raise funds.

For context, several Premier League clubs are expected to show interest in Morton next summer, and Liverpool are among those monitoring the situation closely. However, they will have to watch enviously from afar as he continues his ascent in France.

What’s Next for Liverpool’s Midfield?

The failed attempt to re-sign Morton adds extra urgency to Liverpool’s midfield recruitment. With the squad needing fresh legs and quality, Slot and Hughes must now look elsewhere to address the growing concerns in central areas.

Tyler Morton’s story serves as a cautionary tale: sometimes the biggest transfer mistakes aren’t the ones that cost the most money — but the ones that let talent slip away too cheaply, only for it to return stronger as a rival’s prized asset.
