THE WAIT IS OVER: Liverpool reach decision on signing Jarell Quansah for €80m after Arne Slot sack

Liverpool have officially decided against activating their €80 million buy-back clause for Jarell Quansah this summer, bringing clarity to one of the more intriguing sagas surrounding the club’s defensive rebuild.

Despite the high-profile departure of Arne Slot and a difficult season that saw Liverpool finish fifth in the Premier League and struggle with defensive frailties, the club’s hierarchy, led by Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has opted against an immediate return for the homegrown centre-back.

Quansah, who progressed through Liverpool’s renowned academy, made 58 first-team appearances for the Reds before being sold to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 for £35 million. The 22-year-old defender contributed three goals and three assists during his time at Anfield and has since established himself as a reliable performer in the Bundesliga.

A versatile operator capable of playing centre-back or right-back, Quansah has also earned a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup finals this summer. His development at Leverkusen has been closely monitored by Liverpool, who inserted attractive buy-back options in the transfer: €80 million (£69.3m/$93.3m) this summer, dropping to €60 million (£52m/$70m) in 2027.

Long-term vision over immediate return

According to German outlet Bild, internal discussions at Liverpool did consider triggering the clause, particularly with Ibrahima Konaté leaving the club this summer, creating a clear need for experienced centre-back reinforcements. However, the decision to leave Quansah at Bayer Leverkusen reflects a calculated long-term strategy.

“The Reds will not be bringing their homegrown talent back this summer,” the report stated. “The transfer fee would have been €80 million.”

The club believes Quansah will benefit from another season developing as a leader at Leverkusen before returning to Anfield in 2027 — not as a squad player, but as a key figure in the squad. This approach suggests Liverpool are prioritising the defender’s continued growth and leadership qualities over an expensive short-term fix.

Gomez to remain at Anfield

In a parallel defensive decision, Liverpool have also confirmed they will retain Joe Gomez for the final year of his contract.

The versatile Englishman, who joined the club in 2015, has made 274 appearances and registered 12 assists. Though a new contract appears unlikely, FSG has decided against selling him this summer despite reported interest from several clubs, including Aston Villa, Besiktas, and AC Milan.

Gomez’s ability to cover centre-back, right-back, and left-back positions makes him a valuable asset, especially as Liverpool look to stabilise their backline ahead of the new campaign. Aston Villa, who secured Europa League glory and Champions League football for next season, were understood to be particularly keen on a summer move.

Strategic reset at Anfield

These decisions mark a clear shift in Liverpool’s defensive planning following a transitional and underwhelming season. By resisting the temptation to bring Quansah back immediately, the club appears to be balancing financial prudence with player development, while keeping experienced squad depth in the form of Gomez for one more year.

All eyes will now turn to who Liverpool bring in as Konaté’s replacement and whether they revisit the Quansah option more aggressively in 2027, when the fee becomes significantly more attractive.
