Real Madrid are preparing for a major defensive overhaul under incoming manager Jose Mourinho, and Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori has emerged as the third target on the Portuguese coach’s wishlist.
After securing the signatures of Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries, Mourinho has reportedly urged the Spanish giants to explore a move for the versatile Italian international, sending shockwaves through North London.
Defensive Reinforcements Underway
Real Madrid have identified their rearguard as the most urgent area to strengthen this summer. The club has already moved decisively in the transfer window, with two key additions now effectively wrapped up.
French centre-back Ibrahima Konate is set to join on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract. The 27-year-old has agreed a four-year deal at the Bernabeu, with the move expected to be officially ratified following Real Madrid’s upcoming presidential elections.
Meanwhile, experienced Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries, 30, is arriving from Inter Milan after Real triggered his €20m release clause. Both deals have received the authoritative ‘here we go’ confirmation from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
However, Mourinho is not stopping there. According to two respected Spanish reporters, the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has specifically requested one more defensive reinforcement — Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori.
Mourinho’s Interest in Calafiori
Sergio Valentin took to X to outline Mourinho’s demands, stating that the manager has asked the club to pursue Calafiori. Ramon Alvarez de Mon echoed the claims, highlighting the 23-year-old’s appeal due to his versatility.
“He likes the Italian’s versatility (center-back-left-back),” de Mon posted.
Calafiori joined Arsenal from Bologna in a deal worth £42m (including add-ons) two summers ago. While he has shown flashes of his quality, he has struggled for consistent starts under Mikel Arteta. The Italian competes with Piero Hincapie and Myles Lewis-Skelly for the left-back role and has rarely featured at centre-back, where William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes remain the established pairing.
His omission from the Champions League final squad, with Hincapie preferred at left-back, further underlined his current status in the pecking order at the Emirates.
Arsenal’s Firm Stance
Despite the reported interest from Real Madrid, Arsenal are expected to put up significant resistance. Earlier in 2026, transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed that the club had been “clear” with their position — Calafiori is not for sale.
The defender still has three years remaining on his contract until 2029, leaving Arsenal under no immediate financial or contractual pressure. There have been no indications since March that this stance has changed.
For Mourinho to land his target, it would likely require Calafiori to push for the move himself — something that has not materialised so far. Nevertheless, the allure of a move to Real Madrid under a manager like Jose Mourinho means the situation remains fluid.
What This Means for Arsenal
The potential pursuit of Calafiori represents yet another challenge for Arsenal’s squad planning. Losing a young, versatile defender who still possesses significant upside would be viewed as a setback, particularly after heavy investment in the player just two years ago.
As Real Madrid continue to strengthen under Mourinho’s guidance, Arsenal must now decide whether to dig in and retain Calafiori or prepare contingency plans should the player’s head be turned by the prospect of playing at the Bernabeu.
The summer transfer window is heating up, and this latest development adds another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a dramatic few months for both clubs.
