Kandi Burruss, the renowned producer and reality star, has found herself in the spotlight once again, this time for her outspoken support of Todd Chrisley following his presidential pardon. At the recent 25th Annual BET Awards, Burruss addressed the backlash she has faced for her defense of Chrisley, emphasizing his role as a ‘voice’ for minorities in their ongoing fight against injustice.

Kandi Burruss stands firm in support of Todd Chrisley amidst controversy.
During her June 9 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Burruss reflected on her long-standing friendship with Chrisley, asserting that their relationship predates the current controversy surrounding him. “When I showed love to [Todd], I did get a little negativity online, and I don’t know why,” she lamented. “Todd and I … we’ve been knowing each other since years ago … [So] of course I’m happy for my friend.” Her staunch support comes despite some critics deeming Chrisley’s claims of systemic injustice as insincere.
Burruss contended that Chrisley genuinely cares about minority issues, especially given his role as a father to a young Black woman. Her insights highlight a valuable perspective on how personal relationships can influence public perception in the realm of fame and media. She stated, “He always cared about minorities and issues that dealt with minorities. He was already talking about the issues before he got out of jail,” pushing back against accusations of opportunism.
In addition to discussing her support for Chrisley, Burruss also shared exciting news about her daughter Riley’s new role on the reality show Next Gen NYC. Offering maternal advice, she reminded Riley, “whenever you do reality, you gotta be honest because you don’t want them to roll the camera back on you. So I said, ‘Stand on business every time.’” This emphasis on authenticity speaks to the evolving landscape of reality television, where transparency can resonate with audiences.
Reflecting on her career transition, Burruss expressed her gratitude for stepping away from her role on The Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) after 14 seasons. “I’ve been extremely blessed since leaving my role on RHOA,” she remarked. The significant changes in her life and career, catalyzed by her involvement in successful projects like the Broadway show Othello, demonstrate her versatility and determination to explore new horizons.
“For us to break records and make history, that was kind of one of those things that told me, ‘Girl, you’re doing the right thing,’” Burruss shared, illustrating that her choices have fostered both personal and professional growth. Additionally, her exit from the show has granted her more time to prioritize family, a move that many fans of the reality series can appreciate.
As Kandi continues to navigate her evolving career and public perceptions, she doesn’t shy away from maintaining connections with her past, sharing laughs with fellow cast members and occasionally seeking insider updates about RHOA. “I be getting the tea, honey … Shamea be calling me, ‘What should I do?’” she chuckled, revealing that the bonds formed on the show still hold in her life.
