Justin Jefferson has just been named the NFL’s No. 1 wide receiver – and here’s why Sam Darnold might be kicking himself!

Sam Darnold, the new quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, faces a daunting task in 2025: proving his stellar 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings was no fluke. In Minnesota, Darnold thrived in an ideal environment, supported by a robust pass-blocking offensive line and an exceptional group of receivers. However, his move to Seattle presents new challenges, particularly the absence of one key player: Justin Jefferson, recently crowned the NFL’s best wide receiver by Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson.

In Minnesota, Darnold benefited from a talented receiving corps, including T.J. Hockenson (despite his injury-limited 2024 season), Jordan Addison, and, most crucially, Justin Jefferson. Jefferson, who celebrated his 26th birthday on June 16, 2025, has been a dominant force since entering the NFL in 2020. With over 1,000 receiving yards in each of his five seasons, he holds the NFL record for the highest average receiving yards per game at 96.5—an impressive 9 yards per game ahead of the next closest player, Ja’Marr Chase. In 2024, Jefferson and Darnold formed a dynamic duo, with Jefferson hauling in 103 receptions for 1,533 yards and 10 touchdowns, tying his career-high in scores.

Matt Johnson’s praise for Jefferson underscores his elite status: “Justin Jefferson is the best wide receiver in the NFL and he’s on a trajectory to be one of the best receivers ever. Even with Jefferson only playing 10 games in 2023, he has the NFL record for most receiving yards through five seasons (7,432).” This outpaces the next closest player, Torry Holt, by over 600 yards. Johnson’s analysis highlights why Jefferson’s presence was a quarterback’s dream for Darnold in Minnesota.

Now in Seattle, Darnold faces a stark contrast. The Seahawks’ offensive line struggles with pass protection, a significant downgrade from Minnesota’s sturdy front. Additionally, while Seattle’s receiving options are far from lackluster, they don’t match Jefferson’s caliber. Jaxon Smith-Njigba shows promise as an emerging star, and Cooper Kupp remains a dependable target when healthy. However, neither can replicate Jefferson’s game-changing presence on the field.

Darnold’s success in Seattle will hinge on his ability to adapt to this less favorable situation. While he may miss Jefferson’s unparalleled production, his new receiving corps offers enough talent to keep defenses honest. If Darnold can build chemistry with Smith-Njigba and Kupp, he may yet silence doubters and prove his 2024 performance was more than just the product of a stellar supporting cast. For now, though, it’s hard to imagine he isn’t looking back wistfully at his time throwing to the NFL’s undisputed No. 1 wide receiver.
