In a surprising twist for the Carolina Panthers, a former Dallas Cowboys star, Rico Dowdle, could be the key to unlocking new possibilities for the team’s offense in the 2025 NFL season. Known primarily as a running back, Dowdle’s unique skill set and past experience as a high school quarterback have positioned him as a potential emergency quarterback and a versatile weapon for head coach Dave Canales.
From Asheville to the NFL: Dowdle’s Journey
Rico Dowdle, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, last played in his home state a decade ago as a standout at A.C. Reynolds High School. While he was primarily a running back during his high school career, Dowdle showcased his versatility by transitioning to quarterback in his senior year. In a memorable 2015 game, he threw for 120 yards and rushed for an astonishing 271 yards with five touchdowns, including a jaw-dropping scramble after a botched snap. His performance that day was described as “unstoppable” by Charlotte Observer reporter Alex Zietlow.
Dowdle went on to play running back at the University of South Carolina, where he honed his skills as a powerful and elusive runner. After going undrafted, he signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, eventually becoming a reliable contributor in their backfield. Last season, Dowdle rushed for over 1,000 yards, proving his ability to handle a significant workload. Now, having signed with the Panthers in the offseason, Dowdle is poised to make an impact in Carolina’s offense.
A Dual-Threat Role for the Panthers
While Dowdle is expected to serve as the backup to starting running back Chuba Hubbard, his high school quarterback experience has sparked intrigue about his potential to fill a unique role for the Panthers. With quarterback depth often a concern in the NFL, Dowdle’s ability to step in as an emergency quarterback could provide a safety net for the team. Although he has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL, his athleticism and football IQ make him a candidate for situational plays that leverage his dual-threat capabilities.
Head coach Dave Canales, known for his creative offensive schemes, could explore innovative ways to utilize Dowdle. Whether it’s incorporating him into wildcat formations, trick plays, or even short-yardage situations, Dowdle’s versatility could keep opposing defenses guessing. His ability to run, catch passes out of the backfield, and potentially throw could make him a Swiss Army knife for Carolina’s offense.
A Bigger Impact Than Expected?
Dowdle’s 1,000-yard rushing season with the Cowboys last year suggests he’s more than just a typical RB2. His combination of speed, power, and vision allows him to break tackles and gain significant yardage, making him a valuable complement to Hubbard. However, his potential to contribute as an emergency quarterback or in gadget plays could elevate his role beyond that of a traditional backup running back.
As the Panthers prepare for training camp, which kicks off on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, Dowdle’s ability to adapt and embrace a multifaceted role will be closely watched. If Canales can unlock Dowdle’s full potential, the former Cowboy could become a fan favorite in Carolina and a critical piece of the team’s offensive puzzle.
An Unexpected Turning Point
The Panthers’ signing of Rico Dowdle initially appeared to be a depth move, but his unique background and skill set have opened the door to exciting possibilities. As a former high school quarterback with proven NFL production as a running back, Dowdle represents an unexpected turning point for a team looking to rebuild and innovate. Whether he’s carrying the ball, catching passes, or even lining up under center in a pinch, Dowdle’s versatility could make him the “savior” the Panthers didn’t know they needed.
As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes will be on Dowdle to see if he can translate his high school heroics and NFL experience into a game-changing role for the Carolina Panthers.
