The controversial former Oklahoma Sooners defensive “monster” who abandoned the UFL has officially joined the Dallas Cowboys.

Perrion Winfrey, a former standout defensive lineman for the Oklahoma Sooners, has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, marking a significant step in his tumultuous journey back to the NFL. According to NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson, Winfrey’s signing comes on the heels of a dominant performance in the United Football League (UFL) with the Birmingham Stallions during the 2025 season.

Winfrey, once dubbed a defensive “monster” for his explosive play at Oklahoma, transferred to Norman from Iowa Western Community College and became a two-year starter for the Sooners in 2020 and 2021. His disruptive presence on the defensive line, combined with a standout Senior Bowl MVP performance, led to his selection by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Winfrey appeared in 13 games, showing flashes of the physical prowess that made him a coveted prospect.

However, Winfrey’s NFL career took a sharp detour due to off-field issues. An incident ahead of the 2023 season prompted the Browns to release him, leaving him without a team for most of that year. The New York Jets signed him late in 2023, but he saw action in just one game. In 2024, Winfrey remained a free agent, unable to secure an NFL roster spot.

Determined to revive his career, Winfrey joined the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions for their 2025 season. His time in the UFL proved to be a turning point, as he delivered a stellar performance, earning All-UFL Team honors. In 10 games, Winfrey recorded 29 tackles, including nine for loss, one sack, four pass breakups, and a forced fumble. His contributions helped the Stallions reach the playoffs, showcasing his ability to dominate at a professional level.

Despite his success in the UFL, Winfrey’s decision to leave the league and pursue an NFL comeback has sparked some controversy. Critics argue that abandoning a league that gave him a platform to rebuild his career reflects a lack of loyalty, while supporters view it as a natural step for a player with his talent and ambition. Regardless, Winfrey’s impressive physical traits—size, speed, and disruptive potential—have earned him a second chance with the Dallas Cowboys.

As Winfrey joins a Cowboys defensive line looking to bolster its depth, he faces a critical opportunity to prove himself at the NFL level once again. His journey from college stardom to off-field setbacks, UFL resurgence, and now an NFL return is a testament to his resilience. For Dallas fans, the addition of a player with Winfrey’s upside brings excitement, but his ability to stay focused and capitalize on this opportunity will determine whether he can finally fulfill his immense potential.
