The Chiefs just found a diamond in the rough from UDFA – their opponents don’t even know they’re in danger yet.

The Kansas City Chiefs, perennial Super Bowl contenders, have a knack for uncovering hidden gems in the unlikeliest of places. Their latest find? Undrafted free agent (UDFA) offensive lineman Joey Lombard, a towering talent from the South Dakota Coyotes who could soon become a household name in Chiefs Kingdom—and a nightmare for opposing defenses.

In their ongoing quest to bolster the roster, the Chiefs recently signed Lombard alongside tight end Geor’Quarius Spivey, while waiving Kevin Foelsch and releasing offensive lineman Tremayne Anchrum. While Spivey’s addition provides depth to an already stacked tight end room, Lombard’s signing addresses a more pressing need: fortifying the offensive line. With 51 collegiate games under his belt—48 as a starter—Lombard brings a wealth of experience that sets him apart from other UDFAs vying for a roster spot this summer.

Standing at 6’5” and weighing 305 pounds, Lombard is a physical specimen with the accolades to match. As a senior in 2024, he earned Second Team All-America honors from the Associated Press and Third Team recognition from STATS Perform. His time at South Dakota, primarily as a center, showcased his versatility, durability, and football IQ—qualities that have already drawn high praise from those who know him best.

“Joey undoubtedly has the talent, work ethic, and professionalism to be a great contributor in the NFL,” said South Dakota head coach Travis Johansen. “Kansas City is getting another Yote that will improve their organization daily. We are all proud of what Joey has done but more importantly, what he’s going to do!”

While the Chiefs’ starting center position is firmly held by All-Pro Creed Humphrey, Lombard’s arrival offers much-needed depth and flexibility. Even the best linemen need a breather, and Lombard’s proven track record suggests he’s more than capable of stepping in when called upon. His size, strength, and experience make him a natural fit for a depth role, with the potential to develop into something more under Kansas City’s elite coaching staff.

What makes Lombard a true “diamond in the rough” is his ability to fly under the radar while possessing the tools to dominate. Opposing teams, preoccupied with game-planning against Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs’ high-octane offense, may not even notice Lombard’s contributions—at least not until he’s stonewalling their pass rush or opening lanes for Isiah Pacheco. His presence could quietly tip the scales in Kansas City’s favor, providing the offensive line stability that championship teams crave.

As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on Lombard to see if he can translate his collegiate success to the NFL stage. If his work ethic and talent are any indication, the Chiefs may have no choice but to carve out a roster spot for him. For now, Lombard remains an unpolished gem, but with the right development, he could soon shine brightly in Kansas City’s quest for another Super Bowl.

Opponents, take note: the Chiefs have found another weapon, and you won’t see him coming until it’s too late.
