The Chiefs are quietly negotiating to acquire a two-time All-Pro defensive wall — the final piece for a Super Bowl three-peat quest.

The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off back-to-back Super Bowl victories, are not resting on their laurels as they pursue a historic three-peat in 2025. With a roster already stacked with talent, general manager Brett Veach is reportedly exploring a blockbuster trade to bolster the offensive line, targeting Cleveland Browns’ two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl guard Wyatt Teller. This move could solidify the Chiefs’ interior line, providing the final piece needed to cement their dominance in the NFL.

A Gap Left by Thuney’s Departure

Earlier this spring, the Chiefs made the tough decision to trade four-time Super Bowl champion and All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears. The move was driven by financial constraints, as Kansas City prioritized franchise-tagging right guard Trey Smith and re-signing linebacker Nick Bolton while planning for key free agent additions. Thuney’s departure left a glaring hole at left guard, and while second-year lineman Kingsley Suamataia and backup Mike Caliendo are in the mix, neither has proven ready to anchor the position for a championship-caliber team.

According to Over the Cap, the Chiefs have just under $11 million in available cap space as of June 24, 2025. However, an extension for Trey Smith, who is currently playing on a $23.402 million fully guaranteed cap hit, is expected to free up significant room. This financial flexibility could pave the way for a high-profile acquisition like Teller, whose experience and versatility make him an ideal fit.

Why Wyatt Teller?

Pro Football Network recently floated the idea of the Chiefs pursuing Teller, highlighting his potential to step in as an immediate upgrade at left guard. A three-time Pro Bowler, Teller has started 91 of 99 career games (including playoffs) since entering the NFL in 2018. Despite playing primarily at right guard for Cleveland, his athleticism and skill set suggest he could seamlessly transition to the left side in Kansas City.

Teller’s addition would reunite him with Trey Smith and center Creed Humphrey, forming one of the league’s most formidable interior offensive line trios. His proven track record as a run-blocker and pass-protector would provide quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the protection needed to dissect defenses, while opening lanes for running back Isiah Pacheco in Andy Reid’s dynamic offense.

The Trade Scenario

For the Browns, trading Teller could make sense if their 2025 season falters. Both of Cleveland’s starting guards, Teller and Joel Bitonio, are in the final year of their contracts. At 30 years old, Teller has stronger trade value than the 33-year-old Bitonio, and moving him after June 1 would save the Browns $7 million in cap space, albeit with $19.2 million in dead money spread through 2028.

From Kansas City’s perspective, the trade’s feasibility hinges on finalizing Smith’s extension to manage Teller’s $14-plus million cap hit. The Chiefs could also negotiate with Cleveland to have the Browns absorb a portion of Teller’s salary, a tactic Kansas City has employed in past deals. If the Chiefs’ early-season experiments with Suamataia or Caliendo at left guard falter, a midseason trade for Teller could serve as a critical insurance policy, much like last year’s in-season acquisition of left tackle D.J. Humphries.

A Calculated Risk for a Historic Goal

The Chiefs’ pursuit of Teller underscores their relentless drive to achieve a Super Bowl three-peat, a feat no NFL team has ever accomplished. While rolling the dice on younger players like Suamataia or Caliendo is an option, acquiring a proven veteran like Teller would eliminate uncertainty and elevate Kansas City’s offensive line to elite status.

If Veach can navigate the financial hurdles and strike a deal with Cleveland, Teller’s arrival could be the masterstroke that propels the Chiefs to another championship. As negotiations reportedly heat up behind closed doors, Chiefs Kingdom awaits the next move in Kansas City’s quest for immortality.
