The 49ers Are Aiming for a Stunning “Twist” – Purdy Is Set to Transform with an All-Pro Caliber Weapon

After three straight NFC Championship Game appearances and two Super Bowl appearances in the last five years, few saw the hard fall from grace coming for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.

After a disappointing 2024 season marred by injuries to key players like Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, and Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers are poised for a dramatic resurgence. With quarterback Brock Purdy secured on a blockbuster five-year, $265 million contract extension, the 49ers are back in the Super Bowl conversation. Veteran Bay Area sports reporter Larry Krueger believes the team is just three bold moves away from capturing their first Lombardi Trophy since 1994. These proposed roster shake-ups, detailed in a recent post on X, could transform San Francisco’s offense and defense, with an All-Pro caliber weapon potentially elevating Purdy to new heights.

A Blockbuster Trade: Aiyuk for McLaurin

Krueger’s most eye-catching suggestion involves trading All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to the Washington Commanders for Terry McLaurin. “Trade Brandon Aiyuk to the Commanders for Terry McLaurin,” Krueger wrote. “Win-win trade. Daniels gets his guy Aiyuk, who’s the younger, and potentially better receiver. SF gets a healthy receiver now.” This move would reunite Aiyuk with his former Arizona State teammate, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, while giving the 49ers a proven, durable playmaker.

Aiyuk’s 2024 season was derailed by an ACL injury after a lackluster seven-game stint, a stark contrast to his $120 million extension signed last offseason. At 27, Aiyuk has expressed interest in playing with Daniels, making the trade plausible. Meanwhile, McLaurin, 29, brings consistency with five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and a career-high 13 touchdowns in 2024. His veteran presence could also mentor 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall, creating a dynamic receiving corps to complement Purdy’s precision passing. For Purdy, McLaurin’s reliability could be the All-Pro caliber weapon that unlocks the next level of the 49ers’ aerial attack.

Bolstering the Secondary with a Future Hall of Famer

Krueger also proposes strengthening the 49ers’ secondary by acquiring disgruntled Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey for a sixth-round pick. “The Future HOF(er) can play outside and SF can return Lenoir to his best spot, slot CB and give rookie CB Upton Stout time to adjust to the NFL,” Krueger noted. “Ramsey could also help inside at safety.” While a sixth-rounder may be optimistic, Ramsey’s versatility would address San Francisco’s injury-riddled defensive backfield, which saw stars like Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga miss significant time in 2024. Pairing Ramsey with a healthy Ward could create one of the NFL’s most formidable secondaries, giving Purdy and the offense more breathing room by limiting opponents’ passing games.

A Pass-Rush Prodigy to Complement Bosa

Finally, Krueger suggests a trade for Cincinnati Bengals’ unsigned first-round pick, pass-rusher Shemar Stewart. He proposes sending defensive end Robert Beal, a 2025 second-round pick, and a conditional 2027 fourth-rounder to Cincinnati. With Stewart and the Bengals at a contract impasse, the 49ers could capitalize on the situation. “Stewart and Mykel Williams could be SF next dynamic DL duo,” Krueger wrote. “Bengals are going to get fleeced for Stewart. #49ers might as well do the fleecing.” Stewart, the 17th overall pick in the 2024 draft, would add youth and explosiveness to the defensive line, easing the pressure on Nick Bosa and creating a fearsome pass-rush tandem. This move would ensure Purdy isn’t constantly playing from behind, as a bolstered defense could keep games within reach.

A Recipe for Super Bowl Success?

The 49ers’ 2024 season was a humbling reminder of how injuries can derail even the most talented rosters. However, with Purdy locked in as the franchise quarterback and a healthy core returning, these proposed moves could propel San Francisco back to the top of the NFC. Trading Aiyuk for McLaurin would give Purdy a reliable, All-Pro caliber target, while adding Ramsey and Stewart would fortify a defense that struggled to stay intact last year. If the 49ers execute these moves, they could orchestrate a stunning “twist” in 2025, positioning Purdy and the team for a legitimate Super Bowl run.
