Shocking: Vikings’ $21 Million Star Secretly Wanted to Leave the Team!

The Minnesota Vikings have undergone a dramatic transformation under the leadership of General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Head Coach Kevin O’Connell, crafting a roster that embodies their vision since taking the helm in 2022. Free from the financial shackles of Kirk Cousins’ hefty contract, the Vikings have strategically rebuilt their offensive line to protect their promising young quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. With blockbuster moves in the 2025 offseason, the team is poised to dominate, but a surprising twist involving a key player has sent shockwaves through the fanbase.

A Revamped Offensive Line Signals a New Era

The Vikings made waves in the offseason, prioritizing their offensive line to create a fortress around McCarthy. They drafted Ohio State standout guard Donovan Jackson in the first round, bolstering their front with raw talent and potential. To further solidify the unit, Minnesota inked massive deals with former Indianapolis Colts stars: guard Will Fries signed a five-year, $87 million contract, and center Ryan Kelly joined for two years at $18 million. These additions have catapulted the Vikings’ offensive line to the cusp of a top-five ranking in the NFL, setting the stage for an explosive 2025 season.

Josh Oliver: The Odd Man Out?

Amid this exciting overhaul, a surprising development has emerged regarding tight end Josh Oliver, who is in the final year of a three-year, $21 million contract. Signed for his exceptional run-blocking prowess, Oliver was once seen as a cornerstone of the Vikings’ offensive scheme. However, with the team’s newfound depth and financial commitments elsewhere, whispers suggest that Oliver’s time in Minnesota may be nearing an end.

KSTP’s Darren Wolfson dropped a bombshell on June 5 during an appearance on SKOR North, revealing that there has been “no momentum” on a contract extension for Oliver. Even more shocking, the 28-year-old tight end appears unfazed by the prospect of leaving Minnesota, reportedly content with testing free agency in March 2026. “My understanding is he would be okay with [hitting unrestricted free agency],” Wolfson stated, hinting at Oliver’s confidence in his market value.

A Financial Conundrum at Tight End

The Vikings’ investment in their tight end position is already substantial. With Pro Bowler T.J. Hockenson and Oliver under contract for 2025, Minnesota ranks second in the NFL in total cap spending at the position, shelling out $26.3 million, which accounts for a staggering 12.1% of their salary cap. This financial commitment raises questions about the team’s willingness to re-sign Oliver, especially as they prioritize other positions following their offensive line upgrades.

Despite his value, Oliver’s future in Minnesota looks uncertain. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked him as the 21st-best tight end in the league, but his run-blocking ability is nearly unmatched. “If there were a fantasy football league that prioritized run blocking, Oliver would be one of the first off the board,” PFF’s John Kosko wrote on May 29. “His 76.5 PFF run-blocking grade over the past two seasons ranks second at the position, behind only George Kittle, and his 77.2 PFF overall grade ranks eighth.”

Betting on Himself: Oliver’s Bold Move

Oliver’s confidence in testing free agency stems from his belief in a breakout 2025 season. Having already played for multiple teams in his career, he’s no stranger to change and is reportedly comfortable with the idea of seeking a lucrative third contract elsewhere. “He sure likes it here, [but] he is banking on himself having a good year this year,” Wolfson noted. “Then [he’ll be] in a position to sign a third contract, maybe even back here.”

However, with the Vikings’ focus shifting to their revamped offensive line and other positional needs, they may be outbid by teams eager to capitalize on Oliver’s elite run-blocking skills. “I don’t think [an extension] is happening unless things change,” Wolfson added. “Right now, in the moment, no movement on the Josh Oliver front.”

What’s Next for the Vikings?

As the Vikings prepare for a pivotal 2025 season, the potential departure of Josh Oliver adds an unexpected layer of intrigue. With a fortified offensive line and a dynamic young quarterback in McCarthy, Minnesota is on the verge of something special. Yet, the looming possibility of losing a $21 million star like Oliver raises questions about the team’s long-term strategy at tight end.
