Cowboys’ WR Battle: The Cowboys’ Final WR Spot Is a Bloodbath

As the Dallas Cowboys gear up for training camp, the spotlight will inevitably shine on the running back position, where uncertainty looms large. But don’t sleep on the wide receiver battle—it’s shaping up to be a fierce, no-holds-barred fight for the final roster spot that could steal the show in Oxnard.

The top of the Cowboys’ wide receiver depth chart is locked and loaded. Barring an earthquake in roster decisions, CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, and Jonathan Mingo are virtual certainties to make the 53-man roster. Mingo, in particular, is a safe bet—Dallas didn’t trade a fourth-round pick at last year’s deadline for him to be a question mark. That leaves, in all likelihood, one precious spot for a group of hungry contenders, with as many as five players vying for it: Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Cropper, Parris Campbell, and Kelvin Harmon. This isn’t just a competition—it’s a bloodbath.

The Veteran: Parris Campbell

Parris Campbell, a 2019 draftee, brings the most NFL experience to the table. His 2021 breakout with the Colts—63 catches, 629 yards, and three touchdowns—showed his potential as a reliable target. But the last two years have been rough, with just 134 receiving yards combined during stints with the Giants and Eagles. For Campbell to snag the final spot, he’ll need a standout camp and preseason that screams, “I’m back.” The Cowboys’ love for developing young talent puts him at a disadvantage, but his veteran savvy could still turn heads if he brings his A-game.

The Incumbents: Jalen Brooks and Ryan Flournoy

Brooks and Flournoy have a leg up, having earned roster spots last year and benefiting from Dallas’ investment in them as draft picks. Their 2024 stats were nearly identical, making this a dead heat as camp approaches. Brooks is a burner, capable of stretching the field with his downfield speed, while Flournoy’s 6’1”, 200-pound frame offers a physical edge that stands out among Dallas’ smaller receivers. If Flournoy dominates the Cowboys’ pint-sized cornerbacks in camp, leveraging his size to bully his way into contested catches, he could cement himself as the frontrunner. Keep an eye on how he matches up in one-on-ones—his performance could be the difference-maker.

The Wild Card: Jalen Cropper

Jalen Cropper has been the darling of offseason workouts, dazzling with highlight-reel plays that have become his calling card. The problem? He’s yet to translate that sizzle into the preseason, where games matter most. If Cropper can finally put it all together—pairing his electric offseason reps with consistent preseason production—he could leapfrog the pack and secure the coveted spot. His ability to carry momentum from OTAs into August will be critical.

The Longshot: Kelvin Harmon

Kelvin Harmon faces the steepest climb. The 28-year-old hasn’t played an NFL snap since 2019 and has spent recent years bouncing around practice squads. Still, he turned heads with impressive reps in last year’s camp, showing he’s not just a roster-filler. If Harmon can replicate that magic and outshine his younger competitors, he might pull off the upset of the summer. Don’t count him out just yet—underdogs have a way of surprising in Dallas.

Why It Matters

While other positions on the Cowboys’ roster—like quarterback or offensive line—may have more clarity, the wide receiver battle is pure chaos in the best way. Five players, one spot, and a whole lot of talent on the line. Each contender brings something unique: Campbell’s experience, Brooks’ speed, Flournoy’s size, Cropper’s flash, and Harmon’s grit. Training camp in Oxnard will be their proving ground, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Expect fireworks as these hopefuls leave it all on the field, fighting tooth and nail for a chance to wear the star.
