ROOKIE THREAT: Chiefs Rookie’s $1.9 Million Breakthrough Forces Veteran Out

The Kansas City Chiefs, still stinging from their Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, have spent the offseason aggressively reshaping their roster. The 2025 NFL Draft proved to be a pivotal moment for the franchise, with the team adding seven promising players to bolster their depth. Among them, third-round pick Nohl Williams, a dynamic cornerback, is already turning heads and threatening to shake up the Chiefs’ defensive backfield—potentially at the expense of veteran Nazeeh Johnson.

The Chiefs’ secondary is stacked with talent, but Williams’ arrival has raised the stakes. Chiefs director of player personnel Mike Bradway didn’t hold back when discussing the rookie’s potential. “He can come in and contribute right away,” Bradway said post-draft. “We have a lot of good players in the room. I think his special teams value is where he can probably make an impact early. With his experience and résumé, he’s probably more ready than a lot of corners you might take in that range.” High praise for a third-rounder, and a clear signal that Williams is expected to compete for meaningful snaps from Day 1.

At just 22 years old, Williams brings an electrifying skill set to Kansas City. His college career was a highlight reel of playmaking: 203 total tackles, 25 pass deflections, and 14 interceptions. In 2024 alone, he led the FBS with seven interceptions and the ACC with 16 passes defended, according to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler. Brugler’s scouting report paints a picture of a polished, instinctive corner: “Williams is a smooth mover in both man and zone and displays a natural feel for keeping eyes on the backfield action without sacrificing his coverage.”

Williams wasted no time showcasing his potential during the Chiefs’ minicamp. In one standout moment, he soared for an interception, underscoring his knack for making game-changing plays on the ball. With his combination of athleticism, ball skills, and football IQ, Williams is poised to carve out a role in Kansas City’s defense—and possibly more.

For veteran cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, Williams’ emergence could spell trouble. Johnson, who re-signed with the Chiefs on a one-year, $1.9 million deal, is entering his third season with the team. Over 27 games, he’s recorded 64 tackles, three pass deflections, and one sack. However, his performance last season left much to be desired. Starting in six games, Johnson struggled in coverage, posting a dismal 53.9 overall grade (166th among 222 graded cornerbacks) and a 51.2 coverage grade (171st) per Pro Football Focus. His 108.2 passer rating allowed and 16.1 yards per reception were glaring red flags, highlighting his inability to consistently track the ball or disrupt passing lanes.

Johnson, a product of Marshall, has been unable to elevate his game to match the demands of Kansas City’s competitive secondary. With Williams now in the mix, Johnson’s spot on the depth chart—and potentially the roster—is in serious jeopardy.

As training camp looms, the battle for cornerback reps will be one to watch. Williams’ youth, upside, and immediate impact potential give him an edge, particularly on special teams, where his athleticism could shine early. Meanwhile, Johnson faces an uphill climb to prove he belongs in a crowded room that includes established stars and hungry young talent.

The Chiefs’ front office and coaching staff are clearly excited about Williams’ future, and his early flashes suggest he’s ready to live up to the hype. For Johnson, the clock is ticking. If he can’t turn things around this summer, the $1.9 million veteran could find himself on the outside looking in, overtaken by a rookie who’s already stealing the spotlight.

With the 2025 season approaching, all eyes will be on Nohl Williams as he looks to cement his place in Kansas City’s defense—and potentially reshape the Chiefs’ secondary for years to come.
