COWBOYS IN SHOCK MOVE: Former Division Rival RB Secretly Linked to Blockbuster Trade!

The Dallas Cowboys have been busy reshaping their running back room this offseason, but whispers of a potential blockbuster trade could shake things up even further. After losing 2024 leading rusher Rico Dowdle to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, Dallas made strategic moves to bolster their backfield, adding veteran running backs Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams while drafting promising rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah. Yet, despite this revamped roster, rumors are swirling that the Cowboys might not be done dealing just yet.

According to The Cowboys Wire, Dallas could be eyeing a surprising trade with the New England Patriots for running back Antonio Gibson, a former division rival who spent four seasons with the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys and Patriots already connected earlier this offseason, with Dallas acquiring backup quarterback Joe Milton III from New England, setting the stage for potential further negotiations.

Gibson, now in his second year with the Patriots, has found himself buried on the depth chart behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. This logjam could make the 6-foot, 228-pound playmaker available for the right price. With a 1,000-yard season already under his belt and breakaway speed in his arsenal, Gibson is an enticing option. As Reid D. Hanson of The Cowboys Wire notes, “Gibson is a well-built gamebreaker with elusiveness in the open field and solid pass-catching ability.” His dynamic skill set could add another dimension to Dallas’ backfield.

However, Gibson’s profile bears similarities to rookie Jaydon Blue, raising questions about redundancy. Blue, a dynamic playmaker in his own right, remains unproven at the NFL level, and Gibson’s veteran presence could serve as both insurance and an immediate upgrade. While he lacks the between-the-tackles grit of Javonte Williams or the bruising power of Phil Mafah, Gibson’s versatility could give head coach Brian Schottenheimer more options to craft a potent offensive mix.

Still, the Cowboys’ current backfield is stacked with potential. Williams is poised to be the workhorse, grinding out tough yards, while Mafah brings a wrecking-ball style to wear down defenses. Blue, meanwhile, offers explosive playmaking ability that could translate to long-term stardom. With such a diverse group, some argue that adding Gibson might be an unnecessary luxury, especially considering the cost-effectiveness and upside of the younger Mafah and Blue.

So, why pursue Gibson? His proven production and familiarity with the NFC East could give Dallas an edge, particularly against divisional foes. A trade for the former Commander would signal the Cowboys’ intent to go all-in for 2025, blending veteran savvy with youthful potential. As the offseason heats up, all eyes will be on Dallas to see if they pull the trigger on this bold move. Could Antonio Gibson be the missing piece to elevate the Cowboys’ running game to elite status? Only time will tell.
