Last Wednesday, as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s basketball team wrapped up an intense offseason practice, a whisper of electrifying news rippled through the gym. Liam Vitters, a rising sophomore guard, could hardly believe his ears when an assistant coach dropped a bombshell: Jayson Tatum, the Boston Celtics’ superstar and one of Vitters’ idols, was set to grace their training facility the very next day.
“You’re joking, right?” Vitters blurted out, his voice a mix of disbelief and excitement.
The visit was meant to be a closely guarded secret to respect Tatum’s privacy. Yet, weeks prior, a mutual friend had contacted Chattanooga assistant coach Ricardo Rush, Jr., arranging for Tatum to use the university’s top-tier weight room while in town for former teammate Kemba Walker’s wedding in nearby Trenton, Georgia, just a 20-minute drive away. Despite being on the road, Tatum, nursing a torn Achilles from Boston’s playoff loss in May, was determined to maintain his grueling rehab regimen in a world-class facility.

“Oh, s—,” Vitters exclaimed. “That’s crazy.”
On July 17, as the Chattanooga Mocs finished their workout, Tatum arrived, accompanied by his Celtics trainer, Nick Sang. For Tatum, this was another pivotal step in his recovery journey. For the Mocs, it was a rare chance to witness a global basketball icon’s relentless work ethic up close. After greeting the team and posing for photos, Tatum dove into an intense hour-and-a-half session of Achilles rehab and weightlifting, his focus razor-sharp.
“The crazy thing was how he just got to it,” said Mocs player Parker Robison. “He said ‘Hi,’ took some pictures, and then boom—straight to work. You could tell he was dead serious about this injury.” Tatum’s routine was meticulous: a massage, targeted stretching, band work, and upper-body lifts, all executed with precision despite his limited mobility. Robison was struck by Tatum’s unwavering concentration. “Even between sets, he’s locked in—no goofing around. His mind is set.”
Vitters, a 6-foot-5 guard and lifelong Celtics fan, was equally floored. “When you’re coming off an Achilles tear, it’d be easy to slack off and feel sorry for yourself,” he said. “But Jayson? He’s so intentional, so detailed. It’s a wake-up call for us. If he’s that serious while injured, we’ve got no excuse when we’re healthy.”
Celtics GM Brad Stevens has praised Tatum’s relentless dedication to his rehab, noting that the All-Star has been a fixture at the team’s practice facility all summer, alongside teammate Jaylen Brown, who is recovering from a knee procedure. Even when Tatum travels, Sang is by his side, ensuring no detail of his recovery is overlooked. The Chattanooga stop, meticulously planned to secure a quality gym, was proof of Tatum’s obsession with returning to peak form.
Strength coach Kevin Rodriguez coordinated with Sang to ensure Tatum had everything he needed, from privacy to equipment. Despite the presence of other athletes—men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams—Tatum and Sang were unfazed. “They were so cool about it,” Rodriguez said. “They told us, ‘This is y’all’s home. We don’t mind.’ That humility was huge for our players to see.”
Tatum took time to connect with the athletes, posing for photos and sharing moments of camaraderie. But when it was time to work, Rodriguez urged his players to absorb Tatum’s professional mindset. “This guy’s an NBA champion, coming off a major injury, and he’s still grinding,” Rodriguez said. “He’s showing you what it takes to be elite—treating your body like a professional, every single day.”
For Vitters, a Duke fan who’s tracked Tatum’s career since his college days, the visit was surreal. “It was one of the best moments ever,” he said, still buzzing from the experience. As Chattanooga builds on its NIT championship from last season, Vitters sees Tatum’s visit as a spark for the team’s ambitions. “If he’s putting in that kind of work while injured, imagine what we can do at full strength,” he said. “That’s the mindset we need to carry forward.”
Tatum’s midnight workout in Chattanooga wasn’t just a rehab session—it was a masterclass in discipline, a glimpse into the obsession that fuels greatness. For the Mocs, it was a reminder that the path to success is paved with focus, grit, and an unrelenting drive to be the best.
